Donatas studied through another sleepless #Vilnius night.
#Aušrinė slipped in as first light.
Deadlines vanished.
But every new sentence tasted like the cold coffee from the breakfast table
the day his mother left.

Escape

I want to escape.

Take me away.
Far, far away.

Out of my forsaken flesh.
Away from this abject anguish.

I don't want to be here.
I don't want to feel this way.

Sensations.
Overwhelming.
Mind.
Breaking.
Soul.
Prying itself apart.

Take me away.
Far, far away.

I don't want to be here.
I don't want to feel this way.

Escape I want to escape. Take me away. Far, far away. Out of my forsaken flesh. Away from this abject anguish. I don't want to be here. I don't want to feel this way. Sensations. Overwhelming. Mind. Breaking. Soul. Prying itself apart. Take me away. Far, far away. I don't want to be here. I don't want to feel this way.

Yet, I know.
I know.

Escape is an illusion.
A brief deceitful deferment.

Yet, I need it.
I need it.

To hold onto the last remaining pieces of me.

It occurred to me that I haven't written poetry from #RolimOC 's POV in a hot minute.

Mind your spoons, it's dealing with dark themes.

Slipping into my flesh, twisting, twisting—
Spilling crimson through my life.

But beyond the red haze—
I know a new dawn awaits.

The Incubus

by Richard H. Fay

He enters my dreams in the dead of night,
Wreathed in a halo of infernal smoke.
He's a handsome but truly dreadful sight,
My black angel, one of the fallen folk.

He takes me up in his strong, scaly arms
And pledges everlasting devotion.
I fall for his dark, diabolic charms
As my soul drowns in a sinful ocean.

I sense the danger in his burning touch,
But then lose myself in his glaring eyes.
I crave this fatal attraction so much
That I cannot bear more woeful goodbyes.

I feel my life slowly ebbing away
And will not last until the break of day.

(Originally published in Sounds of the Night, Issue 2, February 2008.)

Once more into the darkness, romantically....here's a darkly romantic horror poem of mine, penned in the persona of a woman in love with an incubus — "The Incubus".

"A Vengeful Monster" is not the first time I've gone down such a dark path in my poetry.
Several years ago, inspired by my dark feelings toward my abusive parents, I wrote "Visages of Betrayal and Madness". This one actually saw publication.

The Succubus (2026)

by Richard H. Fay

She stepped out of an incandescent mist
And sealed my fate with an impassioned kiss.
We conceived plans for an eventide tryst
Where I lost my soul to infernal bliss.

Bewitching sparks lit up her ebon eyes.
Luscious lips parted in a lustful grin
As dread shades cavorted in darkened skies
To celebrate my descent into sin.

Naked flesh shivered from her lethal touch.
My doomed soul departed this mortal shell
And slipped into the Devil’s grasping clutch —
Forbidden passions had damned me to Hell!

Fall not for this fiend’s nefarious charms
Or find yourself caught in Lucifer’s arms!

Completely re-wrote an unpublished dark poem I 1st wrote several years ago (2011?) — "The Succubus". 'Twass one of my less-than-successful attempts at writing sonnets. However, I think this new version is far superior to the clunky 2011(?) one.

Redcap of Dunnor Peel

by Richard H. Fay

Grisly deeds done in days of yore
Forever tainted Dunnor Peel.
Evil acts performed in years past
On guiltless babe and stainless maid
Cursed tall tower, damned lordly hall.
Behind those walls where murder reigned,
Where grim laird once held bloody sway,
A borderland haunt prowls the dark.

Atop night-blackened battlements,
Phantom lights and eldritch murmurs
Disturb midnight’s starlit stillness.
Iron-shod footsteps stomp across
Wooden floors long rotted away.
Within that fortress cold and dank,
A fiery-eyed dwarf roams the dark.

A human caught in Dunnor falls
To a pikestaff wickedly thrust
Right through his beating mortal heart.
The savagely gruesome goblin
Re-dyes his faded crimson cap
In a pool of freshly spilt blood.
With gore-stained hat upon his pate,
A murdering fiend stalks the dark.

The Worst Fear of All

By Richard H. Fay

Darkness falls across
Both featureless fen
And shadowy wood.
Full moon shines over
Both desolate moor
And arable field.

Day gives way to night
As strange creatures stir
And raise a fell din —
Plodding ghoulies groan,
Soaring ghosties moan,
Roving beasties roar,
Roaming banshees wail,
Drifting spectres shriek,
Loping werewolves howl,
Traipsing goblins laugh,
And straying souls sigh.

With such dreadful frights,
With such ghastly sounds
To assail one’s ears,
The worst fear of all
Is none of those things.
The worst fear of all
Is of that unheard
Unheralded thing,
The silent unknown.

Buried Secrets

By Richard H. Fay

Muffled by the earth
Piled on your grave,
Muted words never heard
By your deafened ears
Fall from trembling lips
And misdeeds unknown
Stay ever secret.
Silenced by your death,
Sharp tongue cannot wag,
Stilled voice will not tell,
Crimes remain concealed.

Another of the poems I've written this year, another dark poem — "Buried Secrets". It appears on a photo I took a few years ago while on an official tour of the reputedly haunted Forest Park Cemetery.

A Mystery Better Left Alone

By Richard H. Fay

As I undo the rusty latch
Binding this fusty tome,
I eagerly await answers
To arcane questions
Sane folk never dare ask.

Beneath the bound cover,
Within crackling pages
Rendered from human flesh,
I seek to learn forbidden lore,
And solve the riddle of life.

Reading words penned in blood,
Gaining knowledge forsaken by all,
I forfeit my very soul
To resolve a mystery
Better left alone.

Here's a poem I wrote earlier this year that marked my return to dark/horror poetry — "A Mystery Better Left Alone".
I still think my darker poems numbers among my strongest. I will always be a dark poet at heart.

The Devourer Took a New Name

by Richard H. Fay

Through the ages of stone, bronze, and steel,
The deathless thing spent endless eons
Stalking the moonlit midnight forest,
Haunting humanity’s darkest dreams,
Sapping the lifeblood of innocents,
Devouring mankind’s most tender sprigs.

Moulded to match each mortal’s terror,
Named a thousand times by countless scribes,
Depicted in a million guises
Imagined by many troubled minds,
The dreadful soul wove his frightful webs
‘Til rational thought weakened those threads.

Bored with stealthy nocturnal tramping,
Tired of his diabolic trappings,
Ignored instead of worshipped and feared,
Neutered by pragmatic disbelief,
The restless shade sought more perverse ways
To ensnare prey in a modern world.

Grasping man's hectic celebrations,
Hiding in the commercial bustle
Of racing rats lacking elder sense,
Adopting a mad season's symbol,
The fell fiend became cherished icon
Clad in crimson to slake bloody thirst.

Before elfin crew,
Behind kindly mask,
Beneath flowing beard,
Under newest name,
Children came to him;
Santa.

Murder in the Rain

By Richard H. Fay

Rain falls.
Rivulets flow down
This lonely dark lane.
Blood drips
From my gore-stained axe,
Reddening the stream.
Streaks mar
Your once ruddy cheeks
Now turned ghastly pale.
Deed done,
I slowly tromp on
As the rain still falls.

Silences betray me in teased, umbral breaths,
pulled from deep inside me by the sheer promise of death.
A temptation of infinity in chariots aglow.
A promise of what needs to be from something less than known.
Can the mind every unshatter once this madness does take hold?
Will the world ever matter if this heart would be so bold?

What Greets Me at the End

By Richard H. Fay

My hedonistic life spent
Revelling in mortal sins
Leads to blood and twisted steel
Smoking below a smashed rail.
Blackness blots out the carnage
While a grave chill dulls the pain.

Stars flash before sightless eyes
As a sense of falling yanks
Consciousness back from the brink
Of sweet, blissful nothingness.
Down a tunnel I tumble
Toward a glaring white light.

Savage brightness engulfs all.
Thoughts and feelings become lost
In a hollow emptiness
Until pale images add
Familiar shapes and colours
To the glimmering canvas.

Songbirds twitter atop elms
Lining an idyllic lane,
While picket fences stand guard
Around cheery verdant lawns.
Friendly faces of my youth
Blithely welcome me back home.

Memories of simpler days
Thaw my hypothermic heart.
Eager fingers raise the latch
Of a gladly recalled gate,
But one touch triggers decay;
Cold iron crumbles to dust.

Colours run as shapes dissolve.
Trees melt like burning tapers.
Disturbed from their stately roosts,
Great flocks raise a raucous din
And transform into fell beasts
Dimming the morbid grey sky.

Uncertainty gives way to
Dreadful realization
As screaming souls soar above
A lifeless lunar landscape.
Old Scratch dressed in suit and tie
Greets me with a crooked smile:

"Welcome to Hell."
