#BOU2024 is coming to an end so thank you for engaging! We run several #ornithology conferences each year, so look out for #BOUsci24, #BOUasm24 and #BOU2025. All conferences have parallel X / Twitter events and perhaps they will start featuring more on Bluesky

I am talking at #BOU2024 about biological rhythms and clocks of urban and forest birds. I show that city birds may be less sensitive to ALAN than forest birds. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/abs/10.1...
But our new common garden results suggest this is not related to genetic clock differences.
Conclusions: data on AF use came from a wide range of species, across the globe. Most AF came from human food discards. Most studied species consumed no AF. Exploitation of AF is not a pre-requisite to being an ‘urban bird’ – clearly other feeding opportunities exist #BOU2024
Dietary guild was the only trait associated with anthropogenic food consumption, with aquatic feeders, granivores, generalists and scavengers consuming the most AF - Frugivores, insectivore, carnivores & nectivores were consumed the least AF #BOU2024
We found 155 papers from around the globe – providing data for 132 species, with a total of 424 estimates of the % of anthropogenic food (AF%) in the diet of urban birds. Most studies came from owls, gulls, falcons and corvids, #BOU2024
We undertook a literature search to identify studies which described the percentage of anthropogenic food in the diet of birds living in urban areas. This review formed part of (insta) @hood_birder’s PhD #BOU2024
Many studies have explored the diet of urban birds. These studies have shown that different species' propensity to consume anthropogenic food in urban areas vary. However, no review of this topic has been conducted. #BOU2024

My poster at #BOU2024 outlines neophobia research, examining responses of blue tits to different types of novel stimuli (including R2D2 sounds!) at an urban and rural site in Cambridge
#BOU2024 Black-winged Lapwings were counted twice a month between June 2011 and December 2023 at East London Grand Prix Circuit, South Africa. Peak numbers occurred in autumn and winter but there was considerable variation between years. Mean laying date was estimated between 8 and 19 August.
#BOU2024 #Sech2 In this project, I’m looking at the effect of a high-fat high-sugar diet on the gut microbiota (GM) of young pigeons (as a pathway influencing cognition). By manipulating the diet in early-life (HFHS vs control) we found flexible responses to diet, and long-term effects of HFHS diets
Our second blog series aims to promote recent #ornithology papers and research, regardless of where it is published. Anyone can write for #theBOUblog to get their avian research seen by more people

Today at #BOU2024 Jean Tonleu is talking about the bird feeding guild patterns in the urban areas of Maroua.
The take home message is: urbanisation in the Sahel ecosystem affects bird feeding guilds in different ways.

Bird taxonomic diversity is higher in urban than non-urban African sites contrasting the results on functional & phylogenetic diversity. Intense effect in rainforest than savannah.

Today at #BOU2024 I'm presenting our study on people's perceptions of non-native Ring-Necked #Parakeet in 🇬🇧
1) perceptions = complex
2) many people know🦜
3) 🦜 = pretty
4) 🦜 in urban areas = ok but in rural areas = not okay.

Behavioral mechanisms related to settlement and site fidelity best explained differences in density between urban adapters and avoiders.

Rather nest survival was most affected by the evenness of bird-nest plant networks, which was lower in cities:

#BOU2024 #AlfredNewtonLecture Urbanisation does not seem to affect the survival of nests:

Amanda Rodewald from @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social is delivering #BOU2024 #AlfredNewtonLecture about the processes that shape urban birds. Years of research showed striking differences in bird communities as landscapes urbanised & many assume it's due to the high numbers of predators in cities but..
#BOU2024 #AlfredNewtonLecture is starting and a summary will follow on here shortly
And some of the science will also be featuring on here under #BOU2024 so make sure you stay tuned across the platforms
Tonight, we are starting #BOU2024 with a #AlfredNewtonLecture being delivered by Prof Amanda Rodewald from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology
