Center frame, facing left, looking left atop a Rough-leaved dogwood shrub sits a small songbird, who according to Allaboutbirds.org has a fine, pointed bill and rather long wings and tail. Breeding males are grayish above with a reddish-brown crown, breast and flanks, black face, and creamy buff underparts and rear cheek.

From abcbirds.org., The Blackburnian Warbler stands out among warblers for its bright orange and black breeding colors. It's the only warbler with an orange throat, making it relatively easy to distinguish from American Redstart — the only other warbler with orange and black plumage.

From Allaboutbird.org., Male and female Black-throated Blue Warblers look so different that they were originally described as two different species. The olive-brown females, while not as dramatically marked as the males, have a unique white square on the wing that readily separates them from other female warblers. This warbler breeds in the East and spends the winter in the Caribbean.

From Allaboutbirds.org., The brilliant Prothonotary Warbler bounces along branches like a golden flashlight in the dim understory of swampy woodlands. This golden ray of light is unique among warblers with its beady black eye and blue-gray wings. It is also one of two warblers that build their nests in holes in standing dead trees. Often called a "swamp warbler" in the southeast, it also occurs surprisingly far to the north along rivers. Its population is declining, due to loss of forested wetlands in the U.S. and mangroves on its wintering grounds.

From Allaboutbirds.org., Tennessee Warblers are dainty, thin-billed warblers that breed in the boreal forest of Canada. Though they lack the brilliant colors of other warbler species, breeding males are a crisp mixture of gray head, white stripe over the eye, and green back. Females and nonbreeders can look more generally yellowish, inviting confusion with species like Orange-crowned Warblers, but they always show white under the tail. This numerous species eats mostly small caterpillars and benefits from the spruce budworm outbreaks that happen periodically in their breeding habitat.

A waterfowl with a black belly and under-wing, gray head with a red-brown mohawk-like crest, orange beak and legs, and white on the wings, flies over a pond covered with duck weed. In the background and foreground a few marsh bushes provide cover for the many native species.
A bit of a late post today, but here's a rarity in northern Ohio, a Black-bellied Whistling Duck(Dendrocygna autumnalis)! It was staying very close to a group of Canada Geese with goslings.

From Allaboutbirds.org., On warm summer evenings, Common Nighthawks roam the skies over treetops, grasslands, and cities. Their sharp, electric peent call is often the first clue they’re overhead. In the dim half-light, these long-winged birds fly in graceful loops, flashing white patches out past the bend of each wing as they chase insects. These fairly common but declining birds make no nest. Their young are so well camouflaged that they’re hard to find, and even the adults seem to vanish as soon as they land.
