A white swan with its wings held loosely half-spread lands, black feet first, on a slightly rippled water surface, moving from right to left. The water spashes in its water, and the low sunlight makes it shine. The sunshine falls through the feathers of the swan's wings from behind, making them reflect perfectly on the water.

The UK Kingfisher is a small, brilliantly coloured bird often spotted as a fast-moving, electric-blue flash along rivers, lakes, and canals. Though they are quite small—roughly the size of a sparrow or robin—their striking colours and distinctive shape make them unforgettable.

Here is a description of a UK Kingfisher designed to highlight its most recognizable features:

1. Striking Colours

The Back and Head: The back, top of the head, and tail are a brilliant, metallic turquoise blue that seems to glow or appear as a vibrant streak when it flies.

The Chest and Underside:

The breast is a rich, warm chestnut-orange (or rusty copper) colour.
Facial Markings: It has a white patch on its throat and a white patch on the sides of its neck, which contrast with its orange cheeks.

2. Unique Shape and Silhouette

Long Bill: The most defining feature is its disproportionately long, dagger-shaped black bill. This beak is designed for fishing and can look quite large compared to its body.

Small Body: It has a very short tail and short legs, giving it a compact, "dumpy" appearance, especially when perched.

Large Head: The head appears large in proportion to its small body.

3. Key Behavioural Clues

The "Flash": Often, you will not see a perched bird, but rather a sudden, rapid streak of shining blue flying low over the water.

Hunting Position: They sit very still on low-hanging branches or fences right over the water, watching for fish.

The Call: They make a high-pitched, sharp, whistling call, often before you see them.

4. How to Distinguish Males and Females

Males: Have an almost entirely black beak.

Females: Have a distinct orange-red patch on the lower half of their bill.

Note: In winter, the lack of foliage makes them easier to spot as they move along riverbanks.

A Stout Cisticola perches on a slender bare bit of a green bush, facing left, with some kind of mantis in its beak. It has been raining; we can see water droplets on the greenery. This small bird with dark eyes has a russet forehead, crown, and nape, and a buff throat, chest, and tummy. Its wings and back are shades of dark brown, with the feathers edged in buff. Its tail is dark and a bit tatty.

A male Yellow Warbler is perched on a tree branch; it is facing to the left but looking directly into the camera. It has what might be a small beetle in its beak. The sunlight hits only the front curve of the bird's head, chest, and feet. Overall, the bird is bright yellow; it has rufous striping on its side, and its wings are greenish with some dark feathers bordered with yellow.

A Common Yellowthroat sits a distance away from the viewer on a broken branch, the sun behind and to its left. It is facing to the right of the photo; the thin trunk of the tree is to the bird's right, and further right, we see sunlit fluff, probably from cotton trees, captured in some small branches.

Photograph of a King Penguin Chick taken at Volunteer Point on the Falkland Islands. One of last year's chicks, the time from hatching to fledging is 14 - 16 months, and this all brown ball of fluff is just beginning to shed its down around its face and on the ends of its wings where moulting always starts. If there is one consistent weather in the Flalklands it's wind! This chick needed his grannycoat!

This summer I had a small garden on my balcony. A hummingbird would come by regularly. One day we had a brief conversation. Next summer I’ll work on better camera settings.
