Cornell's new Garden for Birds Project looks interesting.

Acorn eaten with half remaining. Excavated in a round hole.
Looking around my yard for flying squirrel evidence. I know I have some. I don’t see a carrying notch but it’s a round hole to nibble the acorn and they ate pretty neatly. Any flying squirrel thoughts? #virginianativeplants #leavetheleaves #backyardhabitat
Red backed salamander hiding in shallow bucket under some leaves. Yes, he can get out.
Did some backyard relaxing and exploring today. Found this salamander resting in one of the kids toys under the fallen leaves. #leavetheleaves even if they cover your kids stuff. 😆 #backyardhabitat #nativeplants #virginianativeplants
This differential #grasshopper came to visit the habitat today. The #backyardhabitat has taught me a lot about embracing what ever stops by. What an amazing looking insect.
The best part of creating a habitat is not what you control, but what #nature decides to share with you.

This bright, freshly eclosed young lad is likely the product of a backyard habitat! Caterpillars devoured our backyard swamp milkweed not long ago. Tonight he feasted on our golden crownbeard blooms. Wish him a safe journey to Mexico! #monarchbutterfly #pollinators #backyardhabitat #nativeplants
Four red berries bursting out of the shell with the dainty leaves of strawberry bush.
Light pink bumpy berry shells with red berries bursting out.
My hearts-a-busting is busting and it’s so cute. (Aka strawberry bush, yes I barely ever get deer.) #nativeplants #virginianativeplants #backyardhabitat #berries
Monarch wiggling into chrysalis with shed skin on left.
Solidified chrysalis
I saw a monarch going into its chrysalis! It was wiggling a bit and the chrysalis looked so crazy, like a grub almost. I had to leave but when I came back, it looked normal and had hardened. #monarchs #backyardhabitat
Orange male monarch butterfly warming itself on tree branch.
Monarch love. #bugsky #backyardhabitat #monarchs
Monarch butterfly resting on flower right next to its chrysalis.
I came home from work at the perfect time the other day. A monarch had just emerged from its chrysalis and I got see it drying its wings. #backyardhabitat #bugsky #monarchs
Teensy tiny day old monarch caterpillar.
Caterpillar chomping on swamp milkweed.
Few day old caterpillar on swamp milkweed.
Last instar monarch caterpillar
Really good monarch season in our yard. Love that my milkweed is finally getting some attention. First year with caterpillars. #backyardhabitat #bugsky #caterpillars
Pretty orange flower that hummingbirds love.
Jewelweed up close. I really want some in my yard. Any tips on best way to grow? From seed or plant some in the spring? #nativeplants #backyardhabitat #bloomscrolling

Found this grass sticking out of my bee hotel. Looked it up and learned it’s the Grass Carrying Wasp! She’s emerging right in the corner of one grassy tube. #bugsky #backyardhabitat #pollinators
Yellow swallowtail butterfly with blue stripe on lower wings on pink Joe pye weed.
I had my back turned in the garden and then I turned around and it was so close! Female eastern tiger swallowtail. #bugsky #backyardhabitat #pollinators
Looking down on a blue plastic kiddy pool filled with water on a lawn in a backyard. On the ground to the left is a yellow concrete brick to act as a step up to the rim of the pool for all those short legged skunks that may happen by. Inside the pool is another concrete border brick to act as a step out of the pool, just in case. There is a triangle of different border bricks in the center of the pool, surrounding a floating round solar fountain with a steam of water spouting up. This is to keep the fountain in the center so it doesn't float to one side and empty all the water onto the grass.
Improvised summer water source for the wildlife!
I did purchase a kiddy pool that doesn't have holes in it*. I had the solar fountain and bricks already. Works great!

View of exoskeleton with mandates visible
Two exoskeleton, also called exuviae (pl). About 1 ½ inch in length.
¼ profile with an eye casing and the mandible visible. The tear from whence it emerged is prominent.
Naiad exuviae
These are the exoskeleton from dragonfly larvae shed as they emerge.
For my first encounter, I saw one predate a tadpole using those exquisite mandates.
They're pneumatic and are quite fearsome at scale.

Goldfish are getting busy this morning!
The males appear to try to pin the female to make her disgorge her eggs.

Close up of single Scarlet monkey flower vine with two blooming flowers, in a bed of dried leaves.
Omg. Finally got one tiny adorable flower on the western wahoo. Also, scarlet monkey flowers bloomed!
