Born in China's Fujian province, Singaporean artist Liu Kang received his formal training in Shanghai Academy of Fine Art, where he was exposed to Chinese paintings. In 1928, he went to Paris where he was influenced by art movements such as Fauvism and Post-Impressionism. Not only was he one of Singapore’s pioneer artists, he was also a leading figure in the Society of Chinese Artists and the Singapore Art Society. In 1970, he was awarded the Public Service Star for his contributions in the field of art.The historic Bali trip undertaken by Liu and his fellow artists in 1952 was a significant milestone in the development of the Nanyang style. The life and culture of the islanders inspired Liu and as this portrait of a Balinese girl shows, the island continued to fascinate him even in the late 1980s. An unidentified slender Balinese beauty with light brown skin tone is adorned in elaborate attire, likely as a performer. Her oval face, delicate features, almond eyes, graceful straight nose, and small subtly-closed mouth all convey her beauty with a relaxed expression as she looks to our left avoiding eye contact. She wears a magnificent ceremonial headdress composed of intricately arranged creamy white and vibrant red flowers and a structured base of reddish-brown with gold detailing and long, thin, gold-colored strands with red balls hanging down near her ears. The sleeves of a teal garment protrude from a a decorative chest piece in shades of gold and reddish-brown, with a detailed ornate pattern. A purplish-pink patterned belt is visible beneath the chest piece. On Bali, 87% of the population practices Balinese Hinduism (compared to the rest of Indonesia which is 87% muslim), so, the small off-white dot on her forehead, often a bindi or tilak, holds significant spiritual and cultural meaning. It's typically worn during ceremonies and performances, signifying the opening of the "third eye," to connect humans to the universe or the gods.
