The memoir by Richard Hines, Barry Hines' brother. This is my 81 yr old Dad's copy which I sent to him on it's publication in 2016, as we both originate from Barnsley. He highly recommends it as a great read. Looking forward to reading this, this weekend.

A Kestral For A Knave, by #BarryHines, later to be adapted into the film #Kes directed by Ken Loach, was released a few months after I was born. It was filmed in #Barnsley, where I originate from. Such a wonderful read.

Watching #Threads last week 🫣 reminded me that I have a first edition of A Kestrel For A Knave (#Kes) by #BarryHines, who went to the same school as my mum. But my Grandma wrote in it & I stuck in my Ex Libris (oops), so I guess it's not worth much... A treasured book, though.
The BBC is to air nuclear apocalypse docudrama, "Threads", for only the fourth time in 40 years... Enjoy

Read: Barry Hines: A Kestrel for a Knave (1968).
A wonderful little book: a simple, evocative story well told, full of great observations. A feeling of truth. Hines is new to me but I have another of his books, The Gamekeeper, which just moved up the TBR.
