A small Eurasian Treecreeper clings vertically to the side of a tree trunk, its mottled brown and cream feathers blending almost perfectly with the bark. Its white underside appears fluffed against the wood, while its slender, curved bill points upward as if searching for insects hidden in the crevices. The bird’s stiff tail feathers brace against the trunk for support, and the softly blurred background highlights its delicate, upward-climbing posture. ⸻ 🌿 A Few Facts About the Eurasian Treecreeper • Expert climber: Always moves up tree trunks in a spiral, using its stiff tail as a prop—then flies down to the base of another tree to start again. • Perfect camouflage: Its streaky brown back makes it almost invisible against bark—honestly one of the best natural disguises in British woodland. • Specialised beak: That thin, curved bill is ideal for picking insects and spiders out of tiny cracks in the bark. • High-pitched voice: Despite being so subtle visually, it gives a surprisingly thin, squeaky call—easy to miss unless you’re tuned in. • Nesting habits: Builds nests tucked behind loose bark or in tree crevices—very on-brand for such a secretive bird.

During my recent #Hawaii #birding trip, I had a too brief encounter with the smallest Hawaiian honeycreeper --- 'Anianiau.
They are only found in Kauai's high-elevation forests and have become difficult to find in recent years.
