I will not call this a great versus magnificent after staring at it for a while now several years after I already stared at it. Not impressed with Alar wing bar. And the colors on the back are not diagnostic. Comments welcome.

Large generally dark bird with brown to black feathers and green sheen on back, having inflated a large red skin pouch with a few scattered small feathers close to the bird and away from the most distant part of the pouch. Large mildly curved upward greenish beak ending in a moderate hook.

A photograph taken looking upward into an overcast sky above Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe. The sky fills most of the frame, dominated by large, billowing cumulus clouds in shades of white and soft grey, with a pale blue-grey visible in the upper portion where the cloud cover thins. The lighting is diffuse and even, suggesting an overcast but bright midday.

Near the center-upper portion of the image, a bird is captured mid-flight against the bright backdrop of a cloud. The bird appears as a dark silhouette at a significant distance. Its wings are long, narrow, and sharply angled — held in a characteristic shallow “W” or bent-elbow shape — and it appears to be soaring effortlessly without visible wingbeats. The wingspan looks notably wide relative to the bird’s body. Its tail appears pointed or closed. These features are consistent with a Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens), known locally in French as Frégate superbe, a large seabird commonly seen soaring over Guadeloupe’s skies. Frigatebirds are renowned for riding thermal air currents for hours without flapping, and for their piratic feeding behavior stealing food from other birds in flight.

I know it’s a shit picture but I’ve never seen a Magnificent Frigatebird (Frégate superbe) before and it had mostly drifted off before I got a phone pic.
Anyway. #FrigateBird ! #guadeloupe #Birds 🪶

As I’m sitting at an airport this morning, I think I’ll do @alan678.bsky.social’s alt #BirdOfTheDay theme as well. For #NestBuilders, here’s a female #frigatebird carrying adornment for her nest. #birds #WildlifePhotography #EastCoastKin

Great frigatebird (‘iwa) –Fregata minor
81”-91” wingspan. Large with fork-in tail. Agile flyers. Females have a white breast and throat. Constructs their nests in shrubs or sometimes in piles of sticks that have been gathered together. Unlike other seabirds, this species does not land on water as it isn’t “waterproof” like other seabirds. This bird is flying away from us, but it has turned its head backwards in flight to preen its feathers; the sea is below it. ©Aw

“"A sequence of species in a food chain is commemorated in this bowl. In a season that lasts from November to April, fishermen watch for frigate birds, who follow schools of small bait fish and are signals that a school of bonito is coming. As the bonito and bait fish stir up whirlpools of frothy activity, sharks swarm behind and devour the residue. This vessel merges two species in their cycle of consumption and that serve humans in feasts.”
