Large generally dark bird with brown to black feathers and green sheen on back, having inflated a large red skin pouch with a few scattered small feathers close to the bird and away from the most distant part of the pouch. Large mildly curved upward greenish beak ending in a moderate hook.

Frigatebirds are renowned for riding thermal air currents for hours without flapping, and for their piratic feeding behavior stealing food from other birds in flight.

Great frigatebird (‘iwa) –Fregata minor 81”-91” wingspan. Large with fork-in tail. Agile flyers. Females have a white breast and throat. Constructs their nests in shrubs or sometimes in piles of sticks that have been gathered together. Unlike other seabirds, this species does not land on water as it isn’t “waterproof” like other seabirds.
