The same small bird peeks around a leafy twig at the camera. It has a pure white belly and throat. The underside of its black tail is also lined with white.

A small bird with a blue-gray head is sitting on a branch at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site near Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. It’s a Blue-headed Vireo. The John Brown Farm State Historic Site includes the home and final resting place of abolitionist John Brown. There are some very nice trails here going through different habitats, so -- in addition to the historical interest -- it’s one of my favorite places to prowl for birds and other wildlife.
