With so many OTHER crazy things happening (genetically engineered animal companions, telepathy, hover cars, ancient conspiracies overseen by even older AIs) I figured time in the Heroverse could function just like the real world.

Ummm... not really, especially for the Hero trilogy, which took place mostly in a floating megalopolis. I DID have a really clear picture of the city though, especially the alleyways and massive thoroughfares. Think Fifth Element meets Bladeruner.

Most city folk live in artificial light, never actually seeing the sky until they travel outside of the megalopolis.
Those brave enough to travel the planet's surface however... night is the time when all the predators (and Jรธrn has some really big, nasty ones) go hunting...

Hmm, I gotta think about that one...
I guess it depends where you are on Jรธrn (the alien planet in the Hero Rebellion). If you're in one of the floating cities, day and night are nebulous concepts, since the buildings are so tall only the rich see the sky.
