All four images of above composite are of same Hydaspe Fritillary individual nectaring on thistle. Top two images focus on the upperwing. The left is fully illuminated by sunshine (bright yellow-orange with black markings), the right is shaded (dark burnt orange with dark markings). Note the color change although the veins and connecting black bars size and shape are more important in this case. The bottom two photos capture the underwings. The left image is fully illuminated by sunshine; in the right photo the spread underwings shade the lower surface, but are illuminated from above making color discernment very difficult. This underwing color of the "disk" (wine colored from lower left) and the spacing of the "silverspots" (in this case almost touching) bounding the disk are most necessary field marks for correct ID. Lighting makes such a difference when photographing wildlife for ID purposes. Fritillary #butterfy species hard to separate without good looks at upper/lower wings. Both left side images are fully illuminated by sunshine; note the right side shaded look. Without bottom left, specific ID can't be had
