A female Banded Demoiselle lies on her side on the surface of a river, partly submerged, probing beneath the water for suitable vegetation into which to lay her eggs. She is a large, metallic green damselfly with green wings. Her male partner, who is dark metallic blue with a broad blue band across his wings, is standing on top of her partly-submerged body to ensure that no other male can seize and mate with her before she has laid the eggs he fertilized.

A pair of Banded Demoiselles copulating in the 'mating wheel' position. These are large damselflies with brilliant metallic colouration. The male is deep blue, with pale wings that have a thick dark blue band across them. The female is greeny-gold, with golden wings. She is quite young - evidenced by the fact that her eyes are still brown - and as she matures further her eyes will go black and her body and wing colouring will deepen.

A male Banded Demoiselle rests on a buttercup, angled downwards from the top left of the frame towards the bottom right. He is a large, metallic blue damselfly, with a dark cloud running across the middle of his otherwise clear wings.

A male Common Blue butterfly rests on a fading buttercup, with his proboscis partly coiled. His wings are floded, so only the under surfaces can be seen. These are a mid brown colour, with a white fringe, and arcs of white, black and orange markings following the curves of their hind edges. In front of these marks are further scattered black dots, edged in white. At the base of the wings there is a hint of blue, and the butterfly has blue and white hair around his shoulders and head.

A male Banded Demoiselle hangs from a twig, eating a Mayfly he has caught. The Banded Demoiselle is a large, metallic blue damselfly, with a dark blue band running through his paler blue wings. His wing attachments are red, and his eyes are black. The Mayfly is the soft-bodied sub-adult form of the Drake Mackerel. He is mainly buff-coloured, with some brown patterning in his wings, and has three long tails.

A fresh female Banded Demoiselle rests on a burdock leaf. She is a large, metallic green damselfly with brown eyes that will turn black as she matures. She has reflective, greeny gold wings, with a white spot towards the outer end of their leading edges.

A fresh male Banded Demoiselle stands on a wood avens leaf, wings folded above his back, and wings and abdomen both angled upwards at roughly thirty degrees. He is a large, metallic blue damselfly, with a broad black band running through his otherwise colourless wings. Because he's very fresh his eyes are brown, but as he matures they will turn black.
