I'm catching up at #CampRevPit after a hectic couple of days! 😅 For me, it was learning to stop comparing my journey to anyone else's. I focus on doing the best I can, where I am, in my writing journey and life. #CampfireConfessions #CRPBees #WritingCommunity

On my fourth manuscript and it's taken me this long to learn how to not get pulled out of the writing flow by the need to research something or come up with the perfect word. Future me might hate past me when I have to fill in those gaps, though 😂

#CampRevPit #crplunamoths #CampfireConfessions I've struggled a lot with revision and feedback. Overtime I've learned what feedback is useful and to prioritize vs. feedback that I feel comes from a good place (or maybe not in some cases) and may not be useful for revision.

allowing myself to fail at things--writing shitty first drafts, trying out a voice just to realize it isn't right, or even writing an entire manuscript and then figuring out how to write it over again, better. still working on this all the time!

DAY 12 #CampfireConfessions
#CRPbrimstone

Realising that no one has to see my first draft and I can just write. And letting others read my writing even when I think it's not good or perfect. Surprise, surprise - it'll never be perfect to my eyes, I'll always find something that "needs" fixing

Pushing through a draft instead of going back to edit. I really struggle with letting the first draft suck but I have a much better idea of necessary edits at the end of the draft than I do midway through. Waiting to edits saves time and unnecessary work.

#campfireconfessions #camprevpit #crplunamoths I’m a classic overwriter. My drafts are LONG. I have no trouble cutting things that need to be cut, but condensing ideas is SO hard for me. Short stories are basically impossible. I’m learning how to write tighter the more I revise, but it’s slow going.

#CampfireConfessions Day 12: It’s a fine balance between describing the scenery vs only communicating plot- or scene-relative vibes. A lot of readers like knowing what colour the walls are, but that tends not to be relevant.

Day 12: #CampfireConfessions
Well… I am incredibly and hopeless when it comes to romance. In my previous projects I have simply avoided it all together, but in most recents works I’ve pushed through the cringe. Only takes me 3 weeks to write a sex scene now…
No problem… 🥲✌🏻☠️

Accepting and embracing that there isn’t a linear timeline for success. It’s easy to compare oneself to others, but there’s no one way to be a writer (or a human, for that matter!) #CampRevPit #CampfireConfessions #CRPBees 🐝

Finding the balance between trusting the readers too little & trusting them too much. I used to overexplain because I didn't trust my readers to understand from context. But in learning to streamline, I sometimes trust them too much. This is where a good beta helps

Believing in my writing and storytelling. Putting myself out there, allowing my vulnerability to show.
Being around a community with same hopes, worries and dreams has made me come out of my shell as a writer, which I’m very grateful for 💜!

Letting people read my work 😅

RevPit ‘23 was the very first time I’d let anyone take a look at my book, and let me tell you I was almost sick from anxiety.

Big shift but I love getting constructive feedback I can work on now. Brutal or positive, everything helps.

I thought my first book was amazing. I’m embarrassed even thinking about it now. Having a more realistic view of how good my writing is has definitely helped me improve, though I still wonder sometimes if it’s actually terrible but I just don’t see it.

Feedback! Receiving constructive criticism has been a learning process, but I do think it's a critical one. I so value my CPs!

Bold of you to assume I’ve gotten better in the long run…

Serious answer is that editing other writers in my day job (even though it’s a different kind of writing) has given me a better understanding of how to craft story.

On a green hill beneath a starry night sky, the firefly clings to a branch and dangles a tied stack of story notes from a stick with the label “Darlings” written on the top page. The caterpillar reaches for the tied bundle of notes with mouth wide open, ready to chow down. Behind the tree, which still has bite marks from the caterpillar’s previous meal, the mantis holds her claws to her face in dismay. Dawn is beginning to tint the horizon red.

Writing is rarely a linear journey, but all the turns and detours make us better. So, tell us: What’s something you’ve struggled with as a writer that has made you better in the long run?
