The photo shows a fairly large gray and white bird perched on a branch, looking straight at the photographer (me). This photo was taken on the Bloomingdale Bog Trail in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The trail attracts lots of birders interested in boreal species like the Canada Jay. Everyone brings along snacks for the birds, which have become accustomed to hand feeding. The Canada Jays, in particular, are very demanding. They get annoyed if they don’t get their treats.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #LookingAtMe. This #CanadaJay was looking at me, and not with approval either. I had just run out of peanuts. wildadirondacks.org/adirondack-b...

A gray and white bird with a very long tail is perched on the branch of a conifer in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. These birds used to be called Gray Jays, but Canadian birders lobbied to have the name changed, in hopes that the Gray Jay would be named the national bird of Canada. A bill to formalize the designation was introduced last May, but it’s still in committee.

A gray and white bird with a very long tail is perched on the branch of a conifer in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Canada Jays generally reside in conifer and mixed conifer-deciduous forests where spruce trees are present. Their habitats include Black Spruce bogs in eastern Canada, Sitka Spruce and Douglas-fir forests on the northwest coast, and aspen and Engelmann Spruce forests in the Rockies. In the Adirondack Park, Canada Jays prefer medium to mature boreal forest. The Bloomingdale Bog Trail near Saranac Lake, NY, is a good place to find them.
