The unique hexagonal shapes were created as molten lava cooled slowly and contracted, causing vertical fractures. They are in shades of black, grey and brown colours. In the right background is a glimpse of the sea. In total The Giant's Causeway consists of approximately 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed by intense volcanic activity roughly 60 million years ago. According to Irish legend, the Giant’s Causeway was built by the giant Finn McCool (Fionn Mac Cumhaill) to cross the sea to Scotland to fight his rival, Benandonner. Upon seeing the massive Benandonner approaching, Finn’s wife, Oonagh, covered Finn in a blanket to make him look like a baby. When Benandonner saw the size of the "baby," he assumed the father must be massive, causing him to flee in fear. As Benandonner retreated, he tore up the causeway to prevent Finn from following him, leaving only the remnants seen in Northern Ireland and on the Scottish Isle of Staffa.

C16th ruins of a stone castle sit atop a grass covered cliff. Below is a turquoise-grey calm sea and blue sky peeping through grey clouds overhead. Have slightly brightened the image as it was a changeable weather day. Dramatic place to visit - well worth it.

Photograph of the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland. Taken in a semi crouched position to catch the sunlight reflecting off the puddles left on the rocks after rain. In the distance is a relatively calm blue-grey sea and a blue sky with clouds overhead. The site is made of interlocking basalt columns of different heights from volcanic activity many millions of years ago. Although, I prefer the legend - the Irish giant Finn McCool built it as a route to cross the Irish Sea to fight his rival Scottish giant, Benandonner. The latter fled, destroying the pathway on its retreat, leaving only remnants which is what can be seen today.
