Puerto Rico helped fuel America’s corn boom. Some locals see an unfair arrangement. - Investigate Midwest More than a third of the world’s corn supply comes from America’s Corn Belt, a region of sprawling grain fields stretching from Nebraska to Ohio.  But most of the seed varieties planted in those midwestern fields were first tested and researched in Puerto Rico, the small Caribbean island that has sacrificed much of its own […]

As the U.S. Corn Belt thrives, many on the island are asking: Who really benefits?

The Rising Corn Belt CANCER Mystery Among Young Adults In today's episode we're exploring the mysterious rise of cancer among young adults in the Corn Belt, a patchwork of golden fields across the Midwest. We examine why six leading corn-producing states, including Iowa, have experienced significantly higher cancer rates among those aged 15 to 49 since 2015 compared to the rest of the country. Listen to the unsettling stories of young patients, like Mackenzie Dryden and Beatrice Abang-Ntuen, confronting this illness in a health care system that struggles with late diagnosis and long-term effects like infertility. We dive into the potential interwoven causes, including environmental exposures from agrochemicals, nitrate pollution, and the controversy surrounding glyphosate (Roundup). Why cancer is hitting the Midwest harder than anywhere else in America Cancer rates are rising alarmingly in America's Corn Belt states, including Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois, outpacing national averages since the mid-2010s.

📈 Cancer rates are rising in America’s Corn Belt, while declining elsewhere. Experts link the surge to environmental factors like pesticide exposure and farming practices. 🚜⚠️ #PublicHealth #CancerRates #CornBelt #EnvironmentalHealth

Post 50% silking weather risk isn’t the same everywhere. State graphics show IL & IN yields are highly heat-sensitive (30–60 days after 50% silking), while IA is less responsive.

For #grain markets: heat > precip. Thread👇

The HeatRisk forecast for July 23, 2025. National Weather Service/NOAA

DYK why #MidwestFarmers grow so much #corn? The region has an ideal climate. The #CornBelt boasts a long, sunny growing season with good rain. When something grows well, farmers wisely plant it. Infrastructure follows: farm equipment and input suppliers, places for farmers to sell grain nearby, etc.

Forecast models suggest potential rain relief ahead, especially for corn regions:

The ECMWF is fcstng the #Corn prod wghtd precip to be 127% of nrml and the GEFS is fcstng a value of 133% of nrml.

Will it arrive in time to prevent early stress?
