48 grants for the Open Competition Domain Science- XS | NWO 48 projects will receive 2.4 million euros from the Open Competition Domain Science- XS round 25-2. The subjects vary from identification of the most effective fungal cutinase for plastic recycling to comparing gene expression and cellular behaviour of these scar-forming cells with cells from pulmonary emboli that do not show scars.

Excited that our group was awarded an NWO XS grant to support our research into new #covalent #antibiotics for Gram-negative bacteria!

From cheers to tense sighs: results Kiem lottery 2025 announced - Leiden University At a festive gathering, 25 projects were awarded a Kiem grant 2025 - 2026 of 10,000 euros. Interdisciplinary teams from Leiden University will conduct innovative research into horror, international payments and fungi in historical collections, among others.

Excited that our group was awarded a KIEM grant in collaboration with the @smitslab.bsky.social. Using this grant, we will establish establish new interdisciplinary connections and explore the development of #covalent #antibiotics against C. difficile.

Emerging and Re-Emerging Warheads for Targeted Covalent Inhibitors: Applications in Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology Targeted covalent inhibitors (TCIs) are designed to bind poorly conserved amino acids by means of reactive groups, the so-called warheads. Currently, targeting noncatalytic cysteine residues with acrylamides and other α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds is the predominant strategy in TCI development. The recent ascent of covalent drugs has stimulated considerable efforts to characterize alternative warheads for the covalent-reversible and irreversible engagement of noncatalytic cysteine residues as well as other amino acids. This Perspective article provides an overview of warheads—beyond α,β-unsaturated amides—recently used in the design of targeted covalent ligands. Promising reactive groups that have not yet demonstrated their utility in TCI development are also highlighted. Special emphasis is placed on the discussion of reactivity and of case studies illustrating applications in medicinal chemistry and chemical biology.
