Phylloteras sigma (Cynipidae). Currently my favorite local gall because it's so darn cute. You can find them on the undersides of white oak leaves in the eastern United States, and apparently also in Chicago. Likely elsewhere but they are tiny and easy to miss. #galls #wasps #cynipidae #insects

Oak rough bullet gall (Disholcaspis quercusmamma) with a bodyguard that was collecting nectar from the surface of the gall. The wasps and ants that come to these nectar rewards likely deter parasitic wasps and inquiline hangers-on from ovipositing into the galls. ๐ŸŒฟ #galls #cynipidae #wasps #oaks

Scattered plot of data with exit holes chewed in oak apple galls on the Y axis and the volume of the galls on the X axis. Red vertical line shows mean volume of galls and red horizontal line shows mean number of exit holes per gall.

Here's what we're finding, simply graphing the volume of the oak apple gall (in mL) against the number of chewed exit holes.

In one class period we recorded data on 182 oak apple galls.๐Ÿงต

Larger empty apple oak gall (Amphibolips quercusinanis). The wasp larva resides in a protective chamber at the center, grazing on soft plant tissue fed by the radiating fibers. #wasp #insect #hymenoptera #entomology #gall #galls #oak #cynipidae

Ceroptres sp. ovipositing into a furry oak leaf gall (Callirhytis furva). Possibly an inquiline but there's chatter in the literature that some in the genus might be parasitoids. Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. ๐ŸŒฟ #gall #wasp #cynipidae #insects
