Jumping Gall Wasps (Neuroterus saltatorius) produce tiny galls that “jump” on the ground as larvae move inside. This behavior, observed in warm, dry weather, may help the galls burrow into leaf litter for protection.

Any thoughts on what this might be: looks like fungus but the small exit holes make me think some sort of gall (plus it has a stalk base). Light & spongy unlike an Oak Apple but found under Oak. #wasps #galls #gallwasps #nature
Now’s a good time to spot galls before trees leaf out! These growths are made by tiny gall wasps, like the Hackberry and Oak Gall Wasps in these photos. Galls are harmless and part of a fascinating insect-native plant relationship—oaks alone host hundreds of gall wasp species!

Scattered plot of data with exit holes chewed in oak apple galls on the Y axis and the volume of the galls on the X axis. Red vertical line shows mean volume of galls and red horizontal line shows mean number of exit holes per gall.
Here's what we're finding, simply graphing the volume of the oak apple gall (in mL) against the number of chewed exit holes.
In one class period we recorded data on 182 oak apple galls.🧵

'Fossil evidence suggests #gallwasps have been inducing galls for millions of years, long before their interactions with #ants were recognized. “It’s likely that wasps began manipulating ants after refining their ability to induce galls,”... emphasizing the dynamic nature of #evolutionaryprocesses.'
It’s Tell a Friend Friday! Please enjoy this photo I took of a an #oak #leaf featuring a very fuzzy #gall made--unsurprisingly--by an oak gall #wasp! Then RS this, or tell a friend about my #naturalhistory work at RebeccaLexa.com

Their results show that the gall wasps (#Cynipidae) are the most diverse group of galling-inducing agents in #oaks. Indeed, about 82% (roughly 1300 species) of #cynipids use oaks for their home! #gallwasps Pic by Judy Gallagher.
