Dante Alighieri with Florence and the Realms of the Divine Comedy
Domenico di Michelino 1465
Dante standing in the center, bridging the earthly and spiritual worlds:
shown in his traditional crimson red robe and a laurel wreath, symbols typically used to represent great poets. He holds an open copy of his epic poem, The Divine Comedy.
The Three Realms: The background represents the three parts of the poem:
Hell (Inferno): On the far left, shown as a procession of sinners entering the gates of hell with eternal flames.
Purgatory (Purgatorio): The tiered mountain behind Dante, where souls undergo spiritual rehabilitation.
Paradise (Paradiso): Represented by the celestial spheres and golden suns above the mountain.
The City of Florence: On the right, as it appeared in the 1460s. Notably, it includes Brunelleschi's Dome and the town hall, which were completed after Dante's death in 1321
