Our Statement on Labour's Remediation Acceleration Plan Labour's Remediation Acceleration Plan is extremely disappointing. These proposals will only make a horribly complicated process worse with further layers of bureaucracy. The Government may be patting itself on the back by announcing a target date for all high-rise buildings in government-funded schemes to have been remediated; however, the Building Safety Fund first opened for registrations in June 2020, so a target date of nine years from then is underwhelming. In any event, the HSE Building Safety Regulator already said last November that work on remediating dangerous cladding on high-rise buildings will be completed or underway by April 2026. We are still far from a comprehensive solution that will bring about the change innocent leaseholders and residents across the country need and deserve to see. There is still far too much uncertainty. Severe penalties will be meaningless without leaseholders and residents knowing for sure when homes will be made fully safe. This "plan" will do little to change that. There is nothing on non-cladding defects, nothing for non-qualifying leaseholders, nothing for innocent leaseholders in buildings under 11m, nothing for shared owners, nothing on extortionate buildings insurance, nothing on the useless waking watch. The harm that has been caused to ordinary people since the law changed in 2022 will only be increased with these performative proposals. This crisis is a failure of successive governments to ensure homes were built safely over decades. We are yet to see Labour recognise this and show it has the political will to take full control and deliver a comprehensive solution for all buildings and all leaseholders and residents. Despite all the support Labour gave to innocent leaseholders when in opposition, there is still no meaningful oversight and little evidence of a joined-up approach. We've gone through building safety remediation and have an EWS1, but no one is interested in buying a flat at the moment.

We desperately need to fix the existing #BuildingSafetyCrisis first... All the available builders need to concentrate on that first so that the 'housing ladder' can get moving and those of us that are trapped can move on. #EndOurCladdingScandal now, not in 2035... Then, yes, we need to build safely.
