Big welcome to Bluesky to Nigel @nigsyceps.bsky.social from all the #fungifriends :) Not many #entomopathogenic #fungi species that havent had this guy staring at them. Worth a follow just to anchor him here lols. Some zombies from my backyard as post bling :D

First #entomopathogenic #fungi find today was a very elderly #purpureocillium on a spider. Yes, you always want to find a zombie fungi at its peak, the perfect fruiting.... but the trick is to find examples all along their life cycle, as they never not interesting. Only then can you id the random

So if you are hunting a particular #entomopathogenic #fungi species to photograph, the result will depend a lot on what "morph" you find, and at what part of its life cycle. And then theres perspective. For example #Akanthomyces on moths, deserve to be photographed as royalty. #respect

😔 Not a good ##FungalFriday because our grant application for resolving #taxonomy of #Australia's biggest collection of #Entomopathogenic #fungi #Metarhizium was unsuccessful.
🪲 Please bear with me while I try to recover in my hideout just like a sick beetle would do.

This was the first #entomopathogenic fungi I found in the dirt. Some Ophiocordyceps entomorrhiza photos looked similar but I never made an actual ID #Fungifriends

The host is so buried there is little clue to its species. This #entomopathogenic fungi seemed oddly out of place. Clamped on a palm tree like an albino urchin. #Fungifriends

I have still not managed to ID this #entomopathogenic #zombie #fungi, however we have now found it at 3 locations :)

but it is another #spider hosting an #entomopathogenic #zombie fungi that is itself hosting a spikey white hyper parasitic #fungi. #fungifriends

🪲 This #FungalFriday is for #fungi residing on #ChristmasBeetles.
🧫 Last Christmas, we gave our hearts to these sick Anoplognathus porosus beetles & cultured swabs.
🔬 The very next week, we saw interesting fungal cultures arising, which could be both #entomopathogenic & entomobeneficial! 😃

I post a lot of #Gibellula. They were the first #entomopathogenic #zombie #fungi I noticed, and remain today a constant source of wonder to me. The blend of Animal, Fungi and Plant kingdoms coming together to birth such a strange result is just so Earth. What a great planet :) #fungifriends

Post image Post image Sure I may have almost totally destroyed this leaf before knocking it down, but while the maple leaf is shredded and brutalized.... the fungi on spider is completely intact. Throwing sticks is as Australian as cooking on an open fire. Its a good skill to have. While an old example of a gibellula fungi is of no use for culturing or sampling, it is very useful as an education aid. Its one thing to say you find these, its another to find one in front of people, in their garden and introduce it to them. I am a huge fan of NOT collecting fungi, which seems an odd thing to say as I post photos of collected samples. The reality though is 99% of fungi I see I only photograph. Those I collect, I collect for researchers and educators. Its difficult to see the spider under this white blob, but the fungi itself is likely several months old and has long since finished dropping its spores. But if I was to swab it and try culture it, its likely I would see dozens of different opportunistic fungi that have now made their homes there. Genetics has shown us that diversity is everywhere. Nothing is simple. Everything is a dance of different organisms and nutrient loops and cycles. Science gives us a glimpse, but the whole picture is so huge, you could spend your whole life trying to understand the drama playing out on this one leaf, and still die with mysteries unsolved :)

OPERATION *NO REST FOR THE DEAD* #Zombie Hunter hot jungle tips :) Have you been drinking at a friends BBQ and noticed an #entomopathogenic #fungi above you in a maple tree, but its way out of reach and no one believes you? Throwing sticks at it may be the answer. This old gib only took 200 throws!

OPERATION *NO REST FOR THE DEAD* #Zombie Hunter hot jungle tips :) The best mental approach is just "Keepin' on keepin' on". Don't give up. I trained by just trying daily to spot #entomopathogenic #fungi for 4+ years now. Many are tiny, like yesterdays. But in this game thats worth double points!!

OPERATION *NO REST FOR THE DEAD* #Zombie Hunter hot jungle tips :) When hunting the smallest of #Entomopathogenic #fungi, especially on tree trunks, your best tool is often to silhouette them. Move around the tree watching the silhouetted edge. Fungi 1 or 2mm long will be far easier to see this way.
