If you want to see fungi infecting insects in the SF Bay, I think this week is going to be about as good as it gets. I’ve seen lots of infected insects the past few days including these Gibellula that attack spiders

At the end of last year i collected a spider i was hoping to raise that all changed when this parasitic fungi took hold of it i suspect gibellula sp. Quite fasinating really.

While more bowl shaped leaves are more frequently the substrate sites for spider hosting #gibellula, narrow leaves are still often worthy of investigation. In this case this branch had 5 entomopathogenic samples on it, altho only one gib. More exposed leaf types may be a winter thing #zombie #fungi

This first #Gibellula is an #anamorph. While the second Gibellula is a #teleomorph. I dont think they are the same species, but I did find them both in the same area yesterday. Both have consumed spider hosts. #Fungifriends

I post a lot of #Gibellula. They were the first #entomopathogenic #zombie #fungi I noticed, and remain today a constant source of wonder to me. The blend of Animal, Fungi and Plant kingdoms coming together to birth such a strange result is just so Earth. What a great planet :) #fungifriends

Some photography of the #Gibellula #entomopathogenic #zombie #fungi #spider in previous video. Camphor laurel or #Cinnamomum camphora, is a very handsome tree that is a very significant weed species in this area. On one hand it does feed birds, on the other it monoculture dominates the land.

One of my favourite #zombie #fungi photos :) The host is a tiny spider and the fungi is a #Gibellula #entomopathogenic species. These fungi usually have both #teleomorph (sexual state) and #anamorph (asexual state) forms and can look very different indeed. This is a teleomorph aka Torrubiella.
