From ruins to harvest: 50 years after devastating floods, Gujarat villages bring lost farmland back to life When floods washed away his family’s farmland in 1973, Hareshbhai Solanki thought he would never farm it again. Five decades later, he is harvesting his first crop in Rustampura village in Gujarat — the 33-year-old has spent the past week cutting tobacco from fields that lay barren for decades. If all goes to plan, the harvest could bring in Rs 2.5-3 lakh, leaving him with a profit of around Rs 1 lakh from his 1.6-hectare farm. For Solanki, the harvest holds meaning far beyond its monetary value, as the last time his family cultivated these fields was in 1973. Unprecedented rains in Thasra taluka of Kheda district were part of one of the most widespread and catastrophic flood events in the region. Solanki’s grandfather, Vitthalbhai, lost their farmland during those floods. “More than five decades ago, heavy rains washed away our agricultural land in just a week,” he told Down To Earth. “When we went back after the rains subsided, there was nothing left.” The destruction was part of the devastating 1973 floods in Gujarat’s Mahi river basin, caused by torrential rainfall between August 26 and September 9 that year. Entire stretches of farmland were eroded, and many families, including...

This conservation practice boosts wildlife species on farmland, new research finds Dense tree cover can be hard to come by in farm country. But new research shows that more trees close to rivers and streams are linked to higher biodiversity. Researchers at the University of Illinois found evidence of an additional land species for every 10 percent increase in trees and shrubs alongside waterways, which scientists call riparian buffers. The researchers collected water from streams and analyzed any traces of DNA they could find in the samples. The process is called environmental DNA metabarcoding, or eDNA. “We detected bobcats that have had a big population recovery in Illinois over the last few decades,” said Eric Larson, who leads the lab that conducted the study. “We detected bats. We detected box turtles. I think those benefits to wildlife also have benefits to people.” Bobcats were hunted to near-extinction in the Midwest, but they’ve been making a comeback since the 1990s. Larson said this is one of the first studies of its kind in the U.S. The sampling method can be as easy as throwing a bucket on a rope off a bridge, so volunteers or farmers can collect samples to support a wide range of conservation research. Larson said eDNA can be...

When Waste Becomes Fertilizer: Can Sludge-Derived Liquids Reshape Aquatic Life in Farmlands? Newswise — The findings provide critical insights into the environmental trade-offs of recycling sludge-derived liquids in agricultural systems. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an emerging technology for converting sewage sludge and other high-moisture organic wastes into reusable products without energy-intensive drying. In addition to producing hydrochar, HTC generates a nutrient-rich liquid byproduct known as HAP, into which a substantial fraction of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus is transferred. Owing to its high nutrient content, HAP has been proposed as a soil amendment to reduce synthetic fertilizer inputs and enhance crop productivity. However, agroecosystems—particularly flooded systems like rice paddies—rely on complex microbial communities at the soil-water interface. How HAP affects periphyton biofilms and their ecological functions remains insufficiently understood. A study (DOI:10.48130/aee-0025-0012) published in Agricultural Ecology and Environment on 29 December 2025 by Huifang Xie’s team, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, reveals how sludge-derived hydrothermal byproducts reshape microbial networks and ecosystem multifunctionality, providing a mechanistic basis for evaluating the ecological risks of nutrient recycling in agricultural systems. Using controlled microcosm experiments, researchers exposed periphyton communities to gradient concentrations of sludge-derived HAP and comprehensively assessed water physicochemical properties, microbial diversity and composition (Shannon, Chao1, NMDS), community assembly processes (niche breadth and normalized...

The Battle Over Solar on Farmland Get your news from a source that’s not owned and controlled by oligarchs. Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily. “Tell me that is a gorgeous country.” Dave Rogers, an Oregon farmer, points across an expanse of green ryegrass fields. “My goodness, look at that.” We’re walking along a stretch of land that is under contract for solar development by Hanwha Qcells, a Seoul-based firm known for opening the United States’ largest solar manufacturing facility in 2023. Rogers describes the new project, dubbed Muddy Creek Energy Park, as a “huge amount of construction, three miles of solar panels, a football field with hundreds of batteries” to be built. Rogers, a wiry man with tanned skin in a plaid shirt, is easily distracted by pointing out the local flora and fauna. He has spent the better part of two years fighting the project, pitting him against his neighbor John Langdon. Rogers has known Langdon, also a farmer, for Langdon’s entire life. Langdon’s late father was friends with many people now opposing his son’s choice to lease the family land for agrivoltaics, the integration of solar panels into farmland. It’s a practice seen by proponents as vital to expanding cheap renewable...
