The smallest of the flax beds, this one is only about 6' x 30'. You can still see the tight rows the seed was planted in. The plants are about 6 inches tall right now. In the background, a flock of sheep are grazing. A small patch of blue sky has a hazy cast; smoke from wildfires in Manitoba, thousands of miles away.

My 2025 flax plots are planted where I had my fiber hemp last year, and I have never had such a weed-free stand before. Hoping for a good crop this year.

A closeup of the thing the hand is holding; a little tangle of thread, still somewhat holding the shape of a rolled hem (it is the only visible remains of an old linen scarf that was put into the compost bin several months ago.

Last fall I put an old, threadbare linen apron and a holey linen scarf into my compost. Turning the pile today, the only trace I could find of either item was this thread that was part of the scarf hem.

Sam, a local farmer, collecting the seed he'll be growing this spring. He is planning to plant twenty acres of fiber flax for the PA Flax Project! I suspect this may be the largest US fiber flax field sown on this side of the Mississippi River in the past 30+ years. Fiber flax is frequently grown at a seeding rate of 100 pounds/acre. I'll let you do the math...

Each of these black plastic buckets holds about ten pounds of seed.

A handful of one of the three flax varieties the PA Flax Project imported from France this spring; Aramis, Bolchoi, and Damara. The seeds have an antifungal coating on them, giving them a pink cast.

A very greasy and kind of dull-looking sheep fleece. Navajo Churro is a primitive breed with a dual coated fleece with yellowish 10 inch hair-like wavy locks and a shorter dark grey undercoat.
