In 1940, Mayor #FiorelloLaGuardia formed a Committee for the Study of Sex Offenses in NYC. It found no “wave” in sex crimes. He thought the 2,000 or 3,000 arrests a year out of NYC’s huge population was a very low number. Ghosts of #HistSex still haunt. HowSexGotScrewedUp.com

Captain America’s origin story was a bit different from that of many superheroes. He started out as Steve Rogers, a little guy, often pushed around and beat up by the thugs of his home town, Brooklyn, NY. But he never backed down from a fight for himself or any other little guy who was bullied. It was Rogers’ character, not his physical condition that made him stand out to the developers of a super serum that, once injected, turned Rogers into a large, muscular, and nearly indestructible fighting machine. When it came time for Captain America to have a supervillain nemesis, creators Simon and Kirby gave him two: the creepy, vicious, and brutal Red Skull and the real-life leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler. As Simon and Kirby acknowledged, this was intentionally political. They hated and feared what was happening in Europe. But in the U.S., a year before being pulled into fighting in WW2, there was a strident faction of non-interventionists. Jack Kirby said, “It was a time of deep passion. Hitler was grabbing all of Europe, we had Nazis in America, Nazis holding mass meetings in Madison Square Garden. Captain America was created in that atmosphere, he was a natural outgrowth of the passionate mood of the country.”
That first issue of Captain America Comics sold out in just a few days. Timely Comics upped the print run of the second issue to more than a million copies. Captain America quickly became the publisher’s most popular character. So popular, in fact, Timely Comics was targeted by the German American Bund, a large and growing group of American Nazis who supported Adolf Hitler. Some of these American Nazis started hanging around the building in New York City, where Timely Comics artists and writers worked. Police officers were stationed around the building and Mayor Fiorello La Guardia reassured Simon and Kirby that the City guaranteed the safety of Timely’s employees.

On this day in 1940, the superhero Captain America first appeared. He was dreamed up and drawn by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby for what was then called Timely Comics, the publisher that became Marvel Comics.

Screenshot of book page, white with black text. Excerpt from Life With Fiorello, Ernest Cuneo, 1955 (almost a decade after LaGuardia's death). "The ostentations of the very wealthy were to Fiorello what banderillas are to the bull. He described to me in tones of incredulity and indignation the lavish appointments of a huge country club maintained by Andrew Mellon outside Pittsburgh. He patently expected me to share his moral outrage, as though the mere recitation of such indecencies as golf courses, tennis courts, and stables should have me reaching for the gun over the fireplace. I managed a few feeble shakes of die head, but all I could think was that if Fiorello planned to make his anger public we would never, never be invited to this wonderful place. Finally he exploded, "Well, don't you agree?" I tried to explain that whereas I would be glad to slug it out when it was a question of a real social injustice, it didn't actually seem to me important whether a rich man owned one or twenty private clubs. Far more important issues were at stake. After all, I temporized, the fight was for the bridge and the wheel; who cared about the satined cabins below? I braced myself for the blast. Instead, he drew back and examined me with doubtful and concerned eyes, as though he had just heard me say I was the victim of some mental infirmity. He patted me briefly on the shoulder and withdrew into his office without a word." https://archive.org/details/lifewithfiorello002364mbp/page/n79/mode/2up
Just going to leave this here. Excerpt from book by one of #FiorelloLaGuardia 's aides. Remember that La Guardia was a Republican! But I don't think he'd be going to Bedminster or Mar-a-Lago.
