Used local rainbow carrots for the jardinière this year. They're cut into fat coins -- yellow, red, orange. The purple carrots' COLOUR GOES SO DEEP and then centres as yellow or mustard. Was surprised by how deep the purple goes as the ones at big grocer is only millimetres thin.

One of my gigantic mixing bowls filled with prepped veg for the relish. This is the only time I wish I had a food processor. Peppers and cucumbers done by hand. Was too tired to do 1kg of onions by hand last night, so I pureed them in the blender. Curious if I'll taste the difference (will know in a month, after it cures properly).

Spent #FoodDayCanada weekend canning. Yday: jardinière (with leftover brine for cucumber chunks). Today it's relish and garlic dills (not done yet). Local rainbow carrots for the j; the relish ingredients before turning over for the overnight cure. Deets in alt-text.

Bill Pate from Brantford's Brantwood Farms leans on the handle of a dolly. He's in a Hawaiian Shirt with a black ballcap with a red Canadian maple leave on it. In the brim he's put a small Canadian flag and there's a hand written sign that says "buy Canadian" on it. He's so much fun.

I got to do something I'd been wanting to do for ~15 yrs: a sale day at the Elmira Produce Auction Coop!

It's where local, small growers sell their crops to buyers across Ontario..

SO MUCH FUN!

I wrote about it for my #FoodDayCanada column!

Guess who’ll be jamming and pickling this weekend?

If you heard me this morning, you know it’s #FoodDayCanada weekend. After the broadcast, I went up to Herrle’s and got a trolley of fresh, local/Ontario fruits and veggies.

Cooked samosas on a handmade sea blue and green tapas dish with swirly patterns. The samosas are burnished and bubbly. The open one shows the filling of meat and potatoes (from my friend's farm in Plattsville). In the distance is a dish with coriander-mint chutney and tamarind-date chutney.

Each year, I make a dish specifically for #FoodDayCanada.

For the past few years, I consciously showcased foods by people who've made Canada their home.

This year, it's a 3rd culture dish: bison samosas. Details in alt text.

Stopped off at Vincenzo's (Waterloo)and they had my favourite Pingue Porchetta (fr. Niagara) back in stock, so picked that up with Canadian brie and the shop's multigrained mini ciabatta. Turned it into a sandwich (in progress, here), A light slathering of mustard on one piece of ciabatta, and the other slice is layered with the cheese, meat, and toppeed with my homemade Bengali-spiced blueberry chutney. We can see the rest of the cheese, an extra slice (to finish the sandwich) and the pot of chutney on the cutting board).

And my own #FoodDayCanada graze.

Some bought from local independents, some made with Canadian or local ingredients. It talks to the breadth of what Canadian food is.

Next post in the thread will have my Food Day Canada dish :)

The launch graze in Elora was on Tues. Loved that it featured what local chefs could do with Canadian ingredients and the global inspirations that reflect who we are as a nation.

Can only share 4 pics per post, so I'll do a short thread

I know sandwiches are a thing.

But I am thinking of doing a series of sandwiches...maybe a column on them. We've got some tasty handhelds here.

Met up with Jeff Stewart of Food Day Canada to chat about this year's festivities (SO AWESOME). Also talked about so much at Whoopsiedaisy Drinks over a slice tahini-sesame cake and a flat white. Will be back.
