I find it weird to have no #GermanGP or #FrenchGP on the #F1 calendar. I've kind of got used to it but it's still extremely bizarre when I think about it. I miss Hockenheimring. Paul Ricard... not so much to be honest. But I want a French GP back somewhere.

Mike Spence was born #OnThisDay in ’36. He started 36 #F1 GPs & he died in an Indy hospital following a practice crash in a Lotus turbine car. Indy legend Andy Granatelli called him “pure brilliant”. Pic: Spence (Lotus 33) chases Richie Ginther’s Honda RA272, #FrenchGP, ’65.
This is my last #OnThisDay tweet today & it features an iconic #F1 car: a ’61 Ferrari 156. #AnorakFact: sitting in it is Giancarlo Baghetti, the only man to win the first championship F1 GP he entered, the ’61 #FrenchGP. He was born #OnThisDay in ’34. #MerryChristmas one & all!🎄

The #Renault team celebrate their first #F1 win. Gerard Larrousse and Jean Sage are among the jubilant onlookers during the #FrenchGP at Dijon-Prenois on July 01, 1979 in Dijon-Prenois.

Watching the 2000 #Frenchgp one thing I notice at the end of the race is how slim everyone looks. The mechanics, officials, spectators, other team personnel. They all look very lean compared to nowadays.

Remembering Raymond Sommer, born #OnThisDay in 1906, Le Mans winner in ’32 & ’33 & #FrenchGP winner in ’36. WW2 French Resistance service interrupted his prime, but he drove 5 #F1 GPs in ’50, finishing 4th at Monaco in a Ferrari 125 (pic). He died that year at Circuit de Cadours.
#OnThisDay in ’82, at Dijon, Keke Rosberg (Williams FW08) won the #SwissGP, which wasn’t in Switzerland but was so called because there was already a #FrenchGP at Paul Ricard in ’82. #AnorakFact: it was Keke’s first #F1 GP win, & the first by a Finn. Pic by Rainer Schlegelmilch.
Remembering Roger Loyer, born #OnThisDay in 1907. A successful bike racer - he won the 2-wheeled #FrenchGP in ’37 (Montlhéry; 175cc) & ’38 (Reims; 250cc) - he entered one 4-wheeled #F1 GP, Argentina ’54, in a Gordini. #AnorakFact: in later life he ran a car dealership in Paris.

Early July is when the #F1 #FrenchGP always used to be run. It has been held at 7 circuits - & the best was Clermont-Ferrand, a scary 50-corner switchback on real roads beside a dormant volcano. My brand-new #MotorSport column explains more. Click below.

The #FrenchGP has been run #OnThisDay 6 times. #OnThisDay 50 years ago it was run at the original Paul Ricard, a fine & fast #F1 circuit, & it was won by Niki Lauda for Ferrari. Pic: check out the intrepid spectators’ viewing positions!

The #FrenchGP has been run #OnThisDay 6 times, including in ’76, at the proper old Paul Ricard, whose 1.1-mile (1.8km) Mistral Straight was followed by the super-high-speed Signes right-hander. James Hunt (McLaren, car #11) won, lifting himself into world championship contention.
The #FrenchGP has been run #OnThisDay 9 times - the earliest in ’27, the latest in 2005. The driver-car combo of John Watson & Brabham BT45B was one of the fastest of the ’77 #F1 season, yet no wins eventuated. Pic: his unluckiest near-miss came at Dijon #OnThisDay 48 years ago.
