This visual abstract of the paper shows two plots. The plot on the left illustrates that invasive species display a higher functional response. The right-hand plot illustrates that this difference only applies when the invasive species have been sampled in their native habitat.

High functional responses predispose fish species to invasiveness, but these trophic advantages do not necessarily persist outside their native range. Congratulation to Marine and Chloé for this nice paper!

Seed dispersal as a backup system to resprouting and seeding during post-fire regeneration AbstractBackground and Aims. Plant populations can recover from wildfires through resprouting (resprouters), recruiting from in situ surviving seed banks (

This suggests that in fire-prone ecosystems, plants may use multiple backup systems for recovery, even if these systems evolved independently. (7/7)

In the High Arctic, seabird colonies act as nutrient pumps, delivering marine-derived nutrients to terrestrial ecosystems. This marine subsidy increases plant height, leaf size, and nutrient content, pushing communities towards more resource-acquisitive traits. 🌱💧 #FunctionalEcology #Svalbard 2/n

Reflecting on my own functional work it is clear traits like longevity, morphology and mobility can help us predict how species react to disturbance and describe how, if at all, repopulation can occur. #FunctionalEcology can be used as a tool to explore the trajectory of disturbed ecosystems. 🧪🦑🌎

🌱 At the edges of dry forests and in pastures we found:
✔️ Higher species richness
✔️ Greater total abundance
⚠️ But assemblages are dominated by generalist species adapted to heat, dryness, and disturbance.

Study area and design—illustration of the geographical setting of the research, highlighting the Czech Republic (A) and pinpointing the study sites within the Pyramida area (C). The boundaries of each treatment (B) are marked by dark line, indicating the periphery of the stands and forestry intervention. The treatments are as follows: clearing—two sparsely populated old-growth oak clearings; control—younger mixed stands dominated by oak and pine; and ecotone—the transitional zone between the clearing and control treatments.
