A feeder on a cherry tree in the garden on it are two birds bathed in sunlight. One, a Siskin, is feeding, the other, a redpoll, is sat appearing to look into the camera, in fact he was looking around and I hit the shutter at the right moment. The redpoll looks quite young, but it has it adult colours and only being March it must be from last year so not ever so young.

My crabapple tree was laden with fruit this year, was being the operative word as the redwing and blackbirds have now more or less stripped it. This image shows a redwing high in its branches with the prize of an entire crabapple in its beak, which it promptly flew off with to enjoy at its leisure.

A bird feeder in my garden with a visiting finch. It’s gripping onto the edge of the feeder with its wings out and looking around as if to ward off others. My question is this. I have always been a landscape photographer but more and more when I’m out I find myself wishing I could photograph the birds I see when I’m out, but I don’t have a suitable lens. I want to treat myself in the new year but what lens do I need? I have a mirrorless Sony and at the moment my longest lens only goes up to 200mm. I’d thought about a 100 to 400mm and a 2x teleconverter, but then I’ve not read all good things about it, certainly not in conjunction with the teleconverter. Apparently it’s now quite an old lens and results with teleconverter are not good. Also it’s not an internal zoom, maybe not a deal breaker but something to consider. And it’s quite an old lens now, 2017. So do I wait for a new version or do I look at something else? Perhaps even buying a different camera body, Canon or Nikon, whatever second hand, and a lens for that. I’m open to all ideas. Thanks in advance 🦅
