The remains of a wooden railway van (built by the London & South Western Railway) partly covered in ivy. One of the characteristic diagonal braces is visible, as is the lower side beam, which has various rusted iron bolts and straps attached.
In front of the van, a hand holds up a grey resin body of a model of the same van. The model is in Gauge 3, 1:22.6, so is about 9” long

A wooden railway van, built by the #LSWR in ~1912, slowly being reclaimed by nature on a #Hampshire footpath.

Yep as far as possible. I loved woodwork at school and a joy of building in #Gauge3 / 1:22.6 is an option to build in the 1:1 materials. Working brakes? Hmmm I’ll let you know, but possible. 🤔
Carriage kits, 4 layers of ply panelling!
For other prototypes, I’m using Mike Williams’ great resin kits

Cast resin barrels, superb 1/24 models by Armand Bayardi supplied by Steve K Miniatures.
Behind is excellent 1 piece LSWR fruit van body (d1401) in Gauge 3, by Mike Williams models.
All for a display on Trade and Transport (beer and strawberries above, will also include bricks and coal) at Bishops Waltham museum from 3rd May.
Need to get on with it!

Just received these superb 1/24 resin cast barrels. Added to the collection for a planned display on local trade and transport at my local museum.

Next step, weathering practice on the LSWR 4 plank wagon test piece.
Heavier effect on the LH end, lighter on the right.
Used a chalky light brown dust effect, for traffic in the Hampshire Downs area.
Anyone else working on their railway models this weekend?

A LSWR 4-plank wagon side in Gauge 3, a test piece made from basswood with styrene strapping.
Painted brown with work in progress lettering applied: the ‘L’ of LSWR and a chalk-written location of ‘Alresford’
Weathering to be applied next

Lettering up a test wagon side at Missenden Railway Modellers weekend.
In Gauge 3 (1:22.6), using techniques close to the Real Thing - outlining and filling in with a long brush.
A test piece, happy with that so far, coffee! ☕️

Wagon side, a test piece of a LSWR 4 plank wagon, to test materials tools and techniques before starting on the kit.
It’s built in basswood, scored to represent planking, with clear plastic strip for the simplified iron strapping. Glue used is super ‘phatic, so used clear plastic to test the spread and hold

Finally started building that LSWR 4-plank wagon that I’ve put off for too long.
This is a test piece in wood to try out techniques, tools and materials.
Need to finish before a weathering course this weekend. Amazing how a deadline shifts a stuck project! 😁

J Sanger Jnr coal wagon and carts in Bishop’s Waltham yard. B&W photo, thought to be early 1920s as BW engine shed is still standing. 4 men are standing next to the vehicles, the middle one (assumed to be J Sanger Jnr) holding on to the reins of one of the horses. Both horses have white nose flashes.
The coal wagon is a 5 plank wagon, thought to be built by Hurst Nelson (a Scottish builder) from the shape of the axle boxes.

A welcome change of scene today. Research for my #railway200 project at Bishop’s Waltham museum. Coal merchant J Sanger Jnr in BW yard, early 1920s.

Building a list of models for Gauge 3 is so much easier than the actual building…!
