Opening track: "Swingin' For Xmas" (aka "Boppin With Santa). Wonderful mid-70s collection of #GeneAmmons' 1940s and early '50s sides on Chess Records (curiously on sister label Cadet). A sort of side-ways upgrade for me... I have a perfectly OK later stock copy with bland black & white version of this cover. This cover isn't perfect but its the original color cover plus its a white label promo so for 5$ from the bargain bin it gets the nod.

A collector friend brought some fun orphan covers to trade with me at the recent record swap… such as this 1956 original Gene Ammons cover (right) to go along with my 1964 era reissue which ironically enough has the title of the 56 edition on the 64 era labels (got that?).. Such was the attention to detail (not) at small labels like Prestige back in the day when their priority was probably just getting product out at the door and using up all available inventory... Now I just need a clean copy of the LP from either era!

The first audiophile vinyl I purchased was in the lockdown summer of 2020. Ordered a copy through Discogs of the 2015 #AnalogueProductions reissue of #GeneAmmons’ 1960 masterpiece, Boss Tenor. Gene had one of the biggest, fattest, smoothest tenor sounds. AP does him justice.

Sliding into Tuesday with some soothing blue sounds from the great Gene Ammons circa 1958. This is a recent bargyn bin score, a mid-60s second pressing with vinyl in nice enough condition to play on my best turntable. The cover had some seam splits but I don't fret about that much as I have learned how to carefully repair them from the inside to prevent further splitting. These days I place vintage titles in plastic outer sleeves and keep the LP in its paper sleeve outside to prevent further wear of the fragile cover. Have never come across a copy of this album before so finding a solid starter copy is a treat.
