A shelf filled with blooming houseplants, including African violets and Streptocarpus. Flowers range in color from deep purple to magenta, pink, and soft lavender. The foliage is lush and varied, with textured green leaves.
Spotted a burst of color on my #Gesneriad shelf this morning and had to grab a quick photo. A few of the newer additions are just starting to bloom. Mostly #AfricanViolets, with a few #Streptocarpus sprinkled in.

These are easy to grow in bright light. Many are winter dormant, but can be convinced to more or less grow year round. Insularis for example is perfectly happy to skip winter.

This is one of my #Streptocarpus hybrids from the 2024 generation (Dimetris’ ‘Fountain of Wishes’ x Lotus Apparent’s ‘Mauve Zone’). I’ve named this one “Arachne’s Threads”.
This plant came to be via hand-pollination of two unique cultivars. It is the only one of its kind.

This is one of the unnamed #Streptocarpus hybrids from my 2024 generation. I hand-pollinated a blossom of a cultivar called “Dimetris’ Fountain of Wishes” with pollen from one of my own hybrids named “Mauve Zone” and these are the bébés that grew from the resulting seeds.

One of the most familiar #gesneriads is the African violet. Formerly in the genus Saintpaulia, it is now included in the genus Streptocarpus. Hybridizers have transformed this group.
