My neighbor gave me 4 #AfricanViolets a few weeks ago. I've never had success with them, but that has changed.

The purple one has been blooming since Christmas. Variegated one for about 2 weeks and the third is blooming.

So pleased!

Four African violet plants, started last summer from pups removed from larger plants. Front row, a Russian hybrid type. Left front about to start second flush of flowers. Right front blooming for first time. Back two are from grocery store generic dark blue variety. They have grown a lot. No flowers yet.

More African Violet starts. Front left bought as a start from Etsy. Growing very slowly and irregular-looking. Front right, started from a broken leaf, last summer. Needs dividing. Vigorous growth. Back, a pup from same parent as right front, but taken two weeks ago. Leaf appearance is completely different.

Blue and white, ruffled, African Violet flower. These are Russian - type African Violets. I'm not certain, but I suspect the are derived from various mutations that changed the leaves and flowers.

Pink and white, ruffled, African Violet flower. The leaf variegation with some slightly ruffled, pink / white edges, is also starting to show.

The #AfricanViolets are nice inside, when outside is too challenging. The blue-ish one (Sharlene Fantasy White) is starting its 2nd bloom for me. A bit lopsided because I removed large suckers that were deforming growth. The pink-ish one is blooming for the 1st time (Carolina Elegant Affair).

Eloise the cat is sitting on the counter in front of several clay pots, some of which have African violets in them. There’s a bag of African violet pottery soil in the back.

African Violets - from Home Depot (not Africa!)

African Violets. Far left, a dark blue Optimara (I think), then dark red "Ma's Stewed Tomato", pale blue / white hybrid Sharlene Fantasy White (a Russian type?). The less dark leaf one in my hand is Carolina Elegant Affair, and small pale leaf one is Scandal. I think my treatment of these is ok, considering the active blooming. They are under LED lights and I give Schultz liquid houseplant food oer label instructions. Carolina Elegant Affair is pink & white, with variegated leaf edges. Scandal should be deep purple with white edged petals.

A bit concerning. This variegated variety is growing fine, but a couple of the newer leaves have brown areas. I don't know the cause - disease? too bright lights? trauma from repotting? Maybe I should try to carefully snip those off. I bought this plant on Etsy. I need to look for the name. The variegation is quite nice. I've had it a month, and it seems to be growing well otherwise.

Added more #AfricanViolets, via mail. The newest ones have paler leaves than what I already have. Light? Fertilizer? We'll see if the new ones green up. Plus, a highly variegated on I bought last month on Etsy. I don't know cause for the brown areas. Might remove affected leaves.

Mission accomplished. I gently removed the stem, babies, & roots. I pre-moistened the organic potting soil, I made a long deep tunnel for the roots, & carefully laid the mother stem across the soil to allow the new baby petal leaves to breathe air for the first time. 🌿💜

I often use antique bottles to propagate little plants like African Violets. But if you look closely, not only do I have roots, but tiny petals are starting to form. This will need to be CAREFULLY transplanted immediately. A great indoor task while it's drizzling outside.

A shelf filled with blooming houseplants, including African violets and Streptocarpus. Flowers range in color from deep purple to magenta, pink, and soft lavender. The foliage is lush and varied, with textured green leaves.
