The goldcrest is Europe’s smallest bird. The species has two major migration routes: one southwest along the coast of Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands towards Western and Southern Europe, the other east from Scandinavia and the Baltic states to Poland and into the Balkans; it overwinters in large parts of Southern Europe, including the Mediterranean islands, but almost never reaches Africa.
