Close-up of the Susanna Orne gravestone (1777) at Old Burial Hill. The "memento mori" carving by John Homer shows a deeply recessed, anatomically detailed skull resting atop two crossed bones. Below the carving, the hand-etched epitaph is partially obscured by age and natural weathering.

This Medieval cemetery is populated with weathered headstones, many with crosses on top. There is a gavel path at the left, leading to a tall stone tower that has a narrow window opening on the left side.
When we were in #Dublin in 2025, we visited the early Medieval monastic settlement at #Glendelough. A few ruins remain, including the tower seen here, surrounded by a cemetery with ancient carved #Stone markers.

Black and white photograph of a grave slab, the upper portion of which bears a latin inscription to the effect that this commemorates one Archibald Malcolm (also known as Archibald MacCallum) who died in 1685 in the 80th year of his age. In the middle is a coat of arms, supported from beneath by two angels, in which the shield bears four stag's heads surrounding a saltire that is decorated with five five-pointed stars. Above the shield is a helmet from which emanates a banner bearing the motto AD ARDUA TENDIT (it tends to difficulty). Immediately beneath the shield may be seen an hourglass and a heart, both on their sides. In the lowest portion of the slab on the left is a globe inscribed with the letters M, AM, and IM, while on the right there is an open book.
