Today marks 9 years since a young man took the lives of 49 people and wounded 53 others trying to dance and be in community. His actions devastated an entire community and were driven by irrational hatred towards LGBTQ+ people. Hatred as a political tool always begets violence. Right now, more than ever, we need to stand firm and speak out against hateful rhetoric. Stand with our trans and gender nonconforming neighbors, stand with our migrant neighbors, and speak to our collective humanity and dignity. There are no queer community organizations, and few if any queer people, who are not living with a perpetual awareness that there are people in our communities who want us violently erased.
