Overview of 16 photos of terrestrial isopods (woodlice, Oniscidea) taken from the review on the new network 'OniscidBase'.
Very happy to be part of and to see this review on #Oniscidea (woodlice, terrestrial #Isopoda) published in @soilorganismsj.bsky.social .

Common Pill Woodlouse (Armadillidium vulgare). Long Melford, Suffolk.
Having recently purchased the @fieldstudiesc.bsky.social AIDGAP key to woodlice, I managed to find and identify six species today. As well as the four in the photos (see ALT text), there were Common Striped Woodlouse (Philoscia muscorum) and Porcellionides pruinosus. #isopoda
A three cropped shot panel showing a Cubaris sp. Rubber Ducky individual that has the traditional rubber ducky morphology. In the first panel the isopod is looking off to its right eating some freeze dried green peas. In the second the isopod is turned towards the camera. In the third and final one the isopod is turned back to its right. The background is a dark space of leaf litter that is out of focus.
Fed them this morning & took a few quick shots of a Cubaris sp. Rubber Ducky individual eating some peas.

Met this gorgeous Common Sea Slater (Ligia oceanica) on our recent trip to Pembroke! They're such fabulous creatures!! #CommonSeaSlater #Isopoda

Extreme close-up of a terrestrial isopod, likely from the family Porcellionidae, nestled under a piece of decaying wood. The image reveals intricate texture and fine detail on the armored plates and legs, showing thousands of tiny bumps on the dark, shiny exoskeleton.
Terrestrial isopods breathe through modified gills called Pleopodal lungs, which means they need moisture to survive, even though they live on land. The link between terrestrial arthropods and the ocean is thinner than we would like to think sometimes.
