I saw PENDA'S FEN for the first time earlier this year at the Electric Palace in Hastings during the #JackInTheGreen festival. I was surprised at how funny it is. #SpencerBanks is so accurate as the judgemental rebellious teen .

The dresses are full with many underlayers, puffy striped sleeves. The yellow hats have large yellow and red dyed ostrich feathers on top. The women carry parasols, which are open and high in the air as they dance. The green figure is covered head to toe in huge coconut leaves, and wears a small red crown with flag. The only visible part of the green figure is the bare feet.

Since it's Jack-in-the-Green season, this is my favourite. An 1836 lithograph made in Jamaica by Isaac Mendes Belisario. 'The Jack-in-the-Green wears a costume composed of the leaves of the cocoa-nut tree... which is crowned by a large bow with the addition of a couple of flags.' #jackinthegreen
