Today at #BadArtClub for International Women's Month I exerted my considerable lack of talent on two important women of science, #MarieCurie and #KatherineJohnson. Reference pictures also included. My art skills are okay in some areas, but not people, and especially not faces. But I keep trying.

Katherine Johnson’s brilliance calculated the path to the stars when others tried to limit her. She broke barriers at NASA, her math sent astronauts to space. Her legacy reminds us: excellence defeats oppression. #BlackHistoryMonth #KatherineJohnson #HiddenFigures #NASA

We need proper research about the trailblazing Black female mathematicians who took US space science & tech to the next level. NASA human computer #KatherineJohnson who astronaut John Glenn trusted over IBM, #GladysWest whose work helped create GPS. Who are the others? We need ALL their stories.
Premier portrait d'une femme scientifique qui a marqué l'histoire. J'ai repris une personne dont j'avais déjà parlé, avant de vous présenter des femmes françaises et contemporaines 👩🔬🪐📐
Est-ce que vous la connaissiez ?

Today we honor Katherine Johnson. She calculated NASA trajectories by hand.
One wrong number? No one comes home.
She didn’t get it wrong.

Katherine Johnson (August 26, 1918 – February 24, 2020) was an American mathematician whose work at NASA was critical to the success of U.S. space missions, including the first crewed spaceflights. Born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Johnson showed exceptional talent in mathematics from a young age. She graduated from college at 18 and later joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which became NASA in 1958. As part of the space agency’s Flight Research Division, she performed complex manual calculations that guided spacecraft trajectories, launch windows, and emergency return paths. One of her most notable achievements was verifying the computer-calculated trajectory for John Glenn’s 1962 orbital mission, at his personal request. Her work also contributed to the Apollo 11 moon landing and the early Space Shuttle program. Johnson overcame both racial and gender barriers in a segregated workforce and became a symbol of excellence, resilience, and quiet determination. Her story gained renewed attention through the book and film Hidden Figures.
Today's hero is mathematician #KatherineJohnson, no longer "hidden" because she was a key figure in the success of NASA's Apollo missions, and in the hit movie #HiddenFigures.
#GirlPower
She was known as a "human computer" for her tremendous mathematical capability and ability to work with space trajectories with such little technology and recognition at the time.

Book cover with a title that reads, "The Girl Who Became A Computer." It shows a drawing of Katherine Johnson making calculations, another as a youth, and a rocket blasting off.
Really struggling with the cover of this book. Her name isn't even mentioned. In today's context of AI, it seems like science fiction gone wrong, rather than a tribute to an incredible person who happens to be a Black woman.
