Somewhat ironically, the group containing War was damaged by a German parachute mine in 1941, and it was one of two groups which were blown into the river below where they lay until they were recovered, repaired and replaced in their original positions in 1949.

To give an idea of its history, it doesn't appear as a named road on maps until the 1930s, and prior to that, it seems to have only been a pathway leading through the park, created for the 1888 Glasgow International Exhibition, and later expanded for the 1901 exhibition.

While the statues which were also blown from the bridge into the river were retrieved and replaced once the war was over, the ornate parapet was replaced with the much plainer one you can see today and the debris from the original one was left where it fell.
