AWI focuses on Global Earth System Modelling and cryosphere coupling, studying Atmosphere–Ice Sheet–Ocean interactions.
The main role of UPM within #LIQUIDICE is collecting field data on the internal structure of #polythermal #glaciers, using #GPR techniques, and using these data to feed numerical models to predict the temporal evolution of such glaciers under a #warming #climate, including water runoff estimates. 🗻❄️
New paper relevant to and supported by #LIQUIDICE published in Journal of Glaciology.
The study by University of Oslo looks at advanced data assimilation of albedo and snow depth for surface mass balance simulations for Kongsvegen glacier in Svalbard.

❄️ As part of #LIQUIDICE, an autumn campaign was carried out on #HansGlacier #Spitsbergen.
⚠️ Since the late 1980s, its mass balance has been monitored as clearly negative.
💦 The glacier loses about 1.5 m of #water equivalent yearly.
