Building Trust, Saving Lives | How ARC-WA Is Strengthening Epidemic Preparedness in West Africa West Africa is strengthening its defence against Lassa fever and future epidemics. The CEPI-funded Advancing Research Capacity in West Africa (ARC-WA) project is helping build strong, locally led clinical research capacity which will enable faster, safer, and more effective response to Lassa fever and emerging health threats. Through the establishment of Clinical Trial Units, advanced laboratories, mobile clinics, and sustained community engagement, ARC-WA is positioning the region to develop and test vaccines within the first 100 days of an outbreak. Implemented by MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM and the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), with partners in Owo and Bauchi, Nigeria, this is what collaborative science, community engagement, and regional leadership look like in action. Lassa fever cases are rising in West Africa, with Nigeria reporting nearly 1,000 cases and 200 deaths this year. Urban areas are hit hard, and resources are low. We need a vaccine and ongoing funding to combat this outbreak. #LassaFever 🦠 Read more: State of Health News

Good to hear of progress on the rVSVΔG-LASV-GPC vaccine candidate for #LassaFever.
This vaccine originates with the Public Health Agency of Canada, but now it's other institutions, & countries, funding its development.
Would be great if Canada had a bench-to-bedside pathway for Canadian innovations!

"West African leaders commit to advance #LassaFever vaccine for the region"
A positive commitment... but also a prime example of Canadian research (this vaccine originates in Canada's National Microbiology Lab) being dependent on others to get from lab to patient.🤔 www.iavi.org/press-releas...

Cool to see progress on this promising #vaccine candidate for #LassaFever.
Still a bit disappointing that progress on important global health innovation originating from the Canadian government's National Microbiology Lab seems wholly dependent on foreign funding?

🌱 Biodiversity Loss & Disease Risk
Deforestation and habitat destruction increase human-wildlife interactions, raising the risk of zoonotic diseases. Many of these diseases, like #Malaria, #Zika, and #LassaFever, pose severe risks to pregnant women and their babies.
