In Scapa Flow, one of the four late war Königsberg class light cruisers. As the most modern light cruisers, the whole class was surrendered. One survived the scuttling to become the French cruiser Metz.

Alberico da Barbiano was a Giussano-class light cruiser of the Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy). The Italian High Command ordered Alberico da Barbiano and her sister Alberto di Giussano to deliver desperately needed aviation fuel and supplies to Tripoli. Owing to urgency, fuel barrels were stowed on deck which drastically increased vulnerability. On 13 December 1941, while transiting near Cape Bon, Tunisia, they were intercepted by a force of British and Dutch destroyers using radar to locate their position. In a night engagement, torpedoes and gunfire struck both cruisers; Alberico da Barbiano was engulfed in fire and sank rapidly, with heavy loss of life including Rear Admiral Antonino Toscano and her captain.

Ōyodo was conceived as a submarine flotilla flagship and long-range reconnaissance cruiser, intended to coordinate submarine operations across the Pacific. Her design prioritised speed, endurance, and command facilities over heavy armament. Her main battery consisted of six 155 mm Type 3 guns mounted in two triple turrets forward, supplemented by eight 100 mm dual-purpose guns amidships for anti-aircraft defence.
By the time Ōyodo entered service, Japanese naval strategy had changed dramatically. Submarine operations no longer held the central importance envisaged before the war, while carrier aviation had assumed the primary reconnaissance role. As a result, Ōyodo never fulfilled her original mission. Instead, she served as an escort, transport, and fleet support vessel throughout much of her career. In October 1944 she participated in the Battle off Cape Engaño as part of the Northern Force during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, screening Japanese carriers in a diversionary role against U.S. forces.
Ōyodo spent her final months largely immobilised at Kure. During heavy US carrier air attacks in late July 1945, she was struck by multiple bombs, capsized in shallow water, and sank on 28 July 1945 with significant loss of life.

HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck was a light cruiser of the Tromp-class in the Royal Netherlands Navy, named after Admiral Jacob van Heemskerk. Originally designed as a flotilla leader and a torpedo cruiser in Decker’s Fleet Plan of 1931, the ship was commissioned on 10 May 1940, when Germany invaded the Netherlands. Since she was not armed, she escaped to the United Kingdom where she was refitted as an air defence cruiser. During World War II, the ship was assigned as a convoy escort in the Atlantic Ocean and gained the nickname “Oude Jacob” due to her proficiency, and not a single convoy ship was lost when she was on duty.

In January 1942, the ship was sent to the Dutch East Indies to reinforce the defence fleet assembled there, arriving too late to take part in the Battle of the Java Sea. She was then reassigned to the Eastern Fleet and took part in operations ‘Stream’ and ‘Jane’, both aimed at the retaking of Madagascar. In November 1942, the cruiser identified and damaged the German supply vessel and blockade runner Ramses, which was subsequently scuttled by her own crew in the Indian Ocean.

After the war, Jacob van Heemskerck served as a barracks ship for naval trainees in Vlissingen before being decommissioned on 20 November 1969. The ship was eventually sold for scrap on 23 June 1970.

Ship: Karlsruhe
Type: Königsberg Class Light Cruiser
Nation: Germany - Kriegsmarine
Date & Location: Unknown

The stern 15cm guns of the K-Class light cruiser are photographed by a member of the crew. The snapshot clearly details the off center arrangement of the two turrets. This was to allow for greater arcs of fire. In theory, they could also fire forward. Though this was never done in practice since it would damage the superstructure.

The specific ship of the class can be identified by the double tiered foretop. This was unique to Karlsruhe.
