This set was No. 3 in the series, and was released in 1981. • 3100 4-8-4 Northern Locomotive and Tender • 9449 Boxcar • 6304 Tank Car • 6102 Covered Hopper • 9819 Refrigerator Car • 6438 Bay Window Caboose • 6450 Stock Car (Released a year later in 1982)
A low angle shot of the locomotive. This thing is BUILT. The largest and heaviest steam locomotive in my collection. Definitely the most beautiful too.
I got this from a train show in November. I wasn’t expecting to leave with an entire MPC era set, but I’m glad I did! And how could I not? It’s all classic postwar Lionel tooling, but with a Great Northern twist!

From 1979 to 1985 Lionel released five premium sets in the FARR series. Each set celebrated a different railroad. 1981’s Great Northern set was made up of a 4-8-4 Northern, five freight cars, and a bay window caboose.

I was super excited to get this custom run, but Lionel put the wrong road number on the lead engine. Dealer was very gracious in sending the locomotive off to have the proper number applied, and now they are perfect. I'm happy to add another L&N set to the collection!
