Cardiometabolic Risk Increases Morbidity, Not Mortality, in ALD Cardiometabolic risk factors do not increase 5-year mortality in ALD but are linked to higher risk for liver complications, cardiovascular events, and infections.

Cardiometabolic risk factors in alcohol-associated #liverdisease identify a higher-risk phenotype characterized by substantially increased morbidity, despite no significant difference in overall mortality.

Posttranscriptional reprogramming controls MASLD progression through chronic ER stress adaptation In vivo study shows diet-induced ER stress reprograms mRNA translation, promoting MASH and liver cancer progression.

MASLD progression is driven by posttranscriptional reprogramming that enables adaptation to chronic ER stress—initially protective but ultimately disease-promoting, revealing new therapeutic targets. #MASLD #LiverDisease

Occasional Heavy Drinking Significantly Increases Liver Fibrosis Risk in Adults with MASLD A recent study from Keck Medicine of USC highlights that episodic heavy drinking—even just once a month—substantially increases the risk of advanced liver scarring, particularly in individuals with metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). MASLD, affecting approximately one in three U.S. adults, is linked to conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Using data from over 8,000 adults collected through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2017 and 2023, researchers compared individuals who engaged in episodic heavy drinking (four or more drinks for women, five or more for men in a single day) with those who consumed the same total alcohol amount more gradually. Findings indicate that episodic heavy drinkers with MASLD were nearly three times more likely to develop advanced liver fibrosis than non-episodic drinkers. Younger adults and men were more likely to binge drink, and higher quantities in a single session correlated with greater liver damage. The study emphasizes that liver health risk is not just about total alcohol consumption but also the pattern of drinking. Dr. Brian P. Lee, lead researcher, stresses that even moderate drinkers should avoid episodic heavy drinking due to its potential to accelerate liver damage.
