A weathered 19th-century gravestone lies flat on the ground in the churchyard of St Mary Abbots Church, High Street Kensington, London — a parish church originally founded in 1177. The stone, surrounded by fallen autumn leaves and green plants, bears a worn inscription commemorating Walter Coulton and his widow Sarah Coulton. A single yellow maple leaf rests near the upper section, partly covering some of the text. At the bottom edge, the photographer’s patterned shoes are visible. The lettering, in eroded serif type, remains faintly legible, reflecting the age and weathering of the stone. Sacred to the Memory of WALTER COULTON many years an inhabitant of this Parish who departed this life 4th Novr 1830, Aged 74 Years. This stone is placed as a token of esteem by his affectionate ________ Also of SARAH COULTON His Widow who departed this life surviving her deceased Husband only 10 weeks on the 25th of January 1831, Aged 73 Years.
