Honey - this is the chapter illustration of a late fourteenth century Tacuinum Sanitatis. The illumination shows three bee skeps on a board, surrounded by bees flying and landing to enter their hives. Honey was prized for a multitude of assumed medicinal qualities and features in many 'health food' recipes of the medieval and early modern periods in Germany.
A 1547 recipe for #medicinal #rose honey and rose sugar to soothe aching throats. I could use it myself right now.

An illumination from the Hausbuch der Landauer Zwölfbrüderstiftung showing confectioner Hans Behaim (d. 1601) at work. It depict an elderly man dressed in fashionably black late-sixteenth-century clothing. His hat is hung up on the wall behind him, indicating this is an indoor scene. Otherwise, there is no furniture or decoration, just bare, stylised walls. Mr Behaim is standing in front of a tall brazier, agitating a basin suspended from the ceiling by chains. He is making confits, likely of spices, by agitating the ingredients in the melted sugar in the basin to coat them evenly as the liquid evaporates. This kind of basin would also have served to melt sugar for candy.
Today's recipe looks like spice rock #candy. For #medicinal purposes, obviously. A lot of quotidian vices started out as medicine.
