"One of my teachers ... #JosephBrodsky ... exiled from the Soviet Union for being a poet ... said look, you Americans are so naïve. You think evil is going to come into your houses wearing big black boots. It doesn’t come like that. Look at the language. It begins in the language.”

ANNUNCIATION
By #MarieHowe
Even if I don’t see it again—nor ever feel it
I know it is—and that if once it hailed me
it ever does—
And so it is myself I want to turn in that direction
not as towards a place, but it was a tilting
within myself,
Every poem holds the unspeakable inside it. The unsayable... The thing that you can't really say because it's too complicated. It's too complex for us. Every poem has that silence deep in the center of it.

“For every atom belonging to me as good
belongs to you. Remember?”
A reminder of what connects us — and how nothing is ever truly apart.

The final stanza "the sense of being carried/by a current I could not name or change" puts me in mind of that famous painting "Ophelia" by John Everett Millais.

But that the room itself, whatever room we might be standing in,
Assumed an astonishing clarity:
And the things in the room: a table, a cup, a meowing cat.

THE TEACHER
By #MarieHowe
When Moses pleaded, and Yahweh agreed at last to let the people
Hear His voice,
It’s said that he allowed each person to hear what each could bear
To the very brim of that and no more.
The Kiss by Marie Howe When he finally put his mouth on me- —on my shoulder- —the world shifted a little on the tilted axis of itself. The minutes since my brother died stopped marching ahead like dumb soldiers and the stars rested. His mouth on my shoulder and then on my throat and the world started up again for me, some machine deep inside it recalibrating, all the little wheels slowly reeling then speeding up, the massive dawn lifting on the other side of the turning world. And when his mouth pressed against my mouth, I opened my mouth and the world's chord played at once: a large, ordinary music rising from a hand neither one of us could see.
This poem undoes me completely every time I encounter it.

Two crows for company.
One gripping the telephone wire overhead, cries out.
The other, lumbering across the cold dirt like a man in a bar room, answers...

Handwritten poem in a5 gridded book resting on dead leaves. Postscript What we did to the earth, we did to our daughters one after the other. What we did to the trees, we did to our elders stacked in their wheelchairs by the lunchroom door. What we did to our daughters, we did to our sons calling out for their mothers. What we did to the trees, what we did to the earth, we did to our sons, to our daughters. What we did to the cow, to the pig, to the lamb, we did to the earth, butchered and milked it. Few of us knew what the bird calls meant or what the fires were saying. We took of earth and took and took, and the earth seemed not to mind until one of our daughters shouted: it was right in front of you, right in front of your eyes and you didn't see. The air turned red. The ocean grew teeth. Marie Howe
